Also, that Dante hardcover looks kinda cheesy although this is purely an aesthetic complaint.
Otherwise cool shelf though. Is it worth it to read the Gabler Ulysses? How different is it? Would I be better off just rereading the corrected text?

Weird. I made a thread on /lit/ asking which edition to read and a bunch of people were bashing it, thus why I asked. I went with the 1961 corrected text (the same text in your modern library hardcover, I believe).

You probably have a core patrician library tucked in there somewhere, but a lot of those spines look questionable to me.
I remember going to a great uncle's house in Norway; the property was a few hundred years old as was full of huge built-in bookcases, all of which were stuffed. There was a regular library, plus hundreds more books in the study, living room, bedrooms... I was very impressed at first but then I scanned the titles and they were almost all things like "The Greatest Love Stories: Volume VII", and so on. I feel like your shelves might be in a similar condition

>>7881915
There's nothing that distinguishes NDP from Conservatives, however bizarre that sounds, they've become populist trash. At least Libs are attempting to do something by increasing capital spending on infrastructure. I hate Trubae as the possibility of political dynasties forming here, but he's the best of the bunchother than May of course.
>>7881933
>There's nothing that distinguishes NDP from Conservatives
I would agree if you were to go back in time, say to pre-1960s, the conservatives would have been very similar to the NDP. Now they are more libertarian/neocons--indistinguishable from american Republicans for the most part. This is how a lot of conservative MPs ended up jumping ship to the NDP. Conservatism used to be an entirely different animal, and there is no party to represent that old "red-tory" ideology anymore. Liberals on are republican-lite, kind of like Hillary Clinton, but somehow manage to appear super progressive like Bernie Sanders.

Thanks for taking the pic. I had to be sure
>>7882555
Great book for a kid, considering all the illustrations and easily digestible information. Also, all the nudes make it very attention-grabbing for an adolescent.
Everyone always recommends Hamilton's Mythology, and I've flipped through it, but I think this one is ultimately better when you take into account the illustrations, the scope, and all the information you can take in at a glance. Of course, it's also cumbersome and hard to find. But it is nice. Nice to find another who enjoys this book!

Because the people in >>7882233 have read all of their books multiple times - to the point that the bindings are becoming worn. In a few of those pictures, you can see bookmarks and sticky notes too.
Consider the responses to this guy >>7885147
This is just confirming my assumption that most people don't read everything (or anything) on their shelf.
>>7881507
Very nice collection, especially the show-cased books. Have you got around to read on the water margin completely? Romance of the three kingdoms is certainly an advice if you enjoyed it.
>>7885500
while i do agree with you for the most part, i don't think worn bindings are a definitive way to judge how much a person reads. many of my books are quite pristine but i've demolished those texts several times already.
When and how often will you guys re read a book? Just curious. I'm new to reading but I already feel the need to reread stuff. At the same time I want to expose myself to more works
>>7885663
The answer is simple enough. I reread whenever I want to. There's not a set number of times. Think about the number of times you've watched your favorite movie. That's probably how many times I've read my favorite book.
I've read most of the books on my shelf at least twice.
>>7885383
But how many do you have overall? For people who came into a lot of books at once, it can take a while to catch up. 3-4 in a collection of a hundred or two is understandable. But when you start nudging a thousand, it's less likely.
>>7881844
My MIL works at some kind of advertising factory place and gets me these nice copy paper boxes when we move. They fit about 30-50 books and probably weigh less than 20lbs each when filled. Pic in case anyone wants to try to find them, but it's basically like an oversized heavy-duty shoe box.
I've brought my books through three moves so far. Not as bad as people make it out to be, even despite living on a second floor apartment. It's just a day's worth of good exercise.
>>7885147
75% of my print books. 40% of my digital.
>>7885147
I've read about 45% (~500) of what I do own, and I've read an additional ~400 books that I don't own, either by ebooks or through the library. First one's gone up since I can't use the library as much anymore, and since I started buying the ones I read and liked but didn't own.
>>7885690
i understand your point, but the majority of what has been posted isn't anywhere near the thousands range. it makes perfect sense for a young individual with an exorbitant collection to share an exorbitant backlog too.
i guess my perception of "collection" might be too sentimental, as my own is carefully curated and i generally have many thoughts on each and every piece in it (it's only in the triple digits though). it just confuses me a tad when nearly half the books in someone's humble collection goes untouched.
>>7885663
i reread stuff all the time, i don't really pay attention to a schedule. read what you want, there's nothing wrong with enjoying something multiple times! if it makes you feel better, i've indulged in some embarrassing titles enough times to recite certain passages verbatim.
>>7884973
Absurd and fallacious

>all this hostility
Not a very pleasant discussion, anons
>>7885941
well, this is a competitive board.
Most people in these threads are either angry at other posters because
(I) they want people to pay attention to their nice patrician shelves and are angry that plebs are getting all the attention
or because
(II) they are jealous of people who have patrician shelves and call them pseuds in order to defend against the realization that they are pseuds
For that reason, pseuds and patricians both get super hostile in this kind of thread. The only people who are peaceful and happy are the legitimate plebs and everyone other literary person in the world who has the wisdom to keep that shit off of 4chan and never come to /lit/ in the first place.

You know I don't really believe that black people "wuz kings n shit" or anything like that, but I looked for books demonstrating the contrary and couldn't really find any, save those that are racist to the point of being more biased than the mainstream texts. So I've just accepted the academic consensus that I assume is informed by a fear of being labelled racist. You'll never convince anyone who believes it that black Africans weren't ever "kings n shit". You may as well just buy into the claim and read the literature. It's pretty interesting.
(i'm not >>7887749 by the way)
>>7887891
I mean I'm pretty died in the wool right wingand more than a little racist, but I'm not going to deny that there were African Civilizations. The Kingdom of Kongo, the Songhai, Mali, and Ethiopian Empires, etc. It's just that there were also largely uncivilized parts of Africa, places where there were little more than indigenous tribesman and these were the places that really enabled colonization as the colonial powers secured a foothold from which they could expand throughout the whole of Africa. I don't personally enjoy reading into these African histories in the same way that I enjoy reading about the dynastic struggles of Europe, but that's more or less because I"m a product of those European dynastic struggles, they matter much more to me than what the Empire of Ethiopa was doing or the conversion of the Kingdom of Kongo to Christianity by the Portuguese.
>>7887943
Well, yeah, I'm not denying the truth of African history and white colonialism, and personally I'm a pretty strong progressivethough also quite racistbut I think it's silly to imply that African and European civilizations were equal, even if the inequality is fundamentally informed by geography (i don't believe in racial superiority, only cultural superiority). This totally revisionist claim, though, seems to be the implicit message of most the books I read on African Archaeology and precolonial history.
I still read them, though, mostly because what you might call "alternative" histories, i.e. non Eurasian narratives strike me as being more connected the present in some kind of weird postmodernist regard.and because you have to read up on the enemy's history if you want to win the impending race war

I like Dance Of The Happy Shades, though I don't think I have that one
Of what's on my shelves I've only read Castle Rock and Runaway. I just recently bought a boxed set on sale. Runaway's excellent.

went to the same show in Amsterdam, good taste.
What do you think about my bookshelf? A bit small at the moment but I have a box of books I'm selling later. Afterwards, I will be able to buy a bunch of good ones, looking for The Histories by Herodotus but couldn't find it last I checked at my local shop.

Well fuck. Now I've got webmd syndrome because I just looked up my medication and despite it being an anticonvulsant I'm now worried I'm susceptible to absence seizures.

Is the whole board this anglocentric or foreign people don't post thinking we're not able to identify the books?
>>7890556
Foreign to Anglo? Do you want to see a Eastern person's bookshelf? I'm not sure many Easterners come on /lit/ or 4chan itself, or that any would come to this very thread to post.
shitty picture

non-english texts dont seem to be well received here. i don't post my shelves since it's predominantly scandinavian or moon rune books, so most people wouldn't be able to read it.
>>7890577
most east asian countries have their own forums to post in, i don't know anyone locally who posts here beyond myself.
>tfw gf left me and I had too many books from her so yesterday I literally gave them all away and have literally zero books now.

yea i think it's great. very atmospheric and a more subtle/restrained look into the theme of politics on art compared to bolano's later stuff. it's definitely an early work and there are flaws, but it's formidable for a "first" novel. it's much more character/traditional "psychological"ly driven than bolano's later stuff.
lots of nice looking shelves here, how do you guys find space for large bookshelves or collections? are most of you homeowners?

I have a ~1100 sqft apartment. It's not huge, but I have space for five bookcases. Planning to get three more into the bedroom.
>>7890739
rather, rent* not have
Probably not going the condo route, I want at least 2000 sqft in the end. Only way I'll have a full-room library.

I got one large Louis XV curio for beautiful, expensive or rare editions, the rest (the vast majority) goes to two regular bookcases.
