Are there any examples in Western literature of second-order irony (ironic irony) or higher, or is it just a meme?

Maybe if we actually took this seriously we could determine whether or not we've actually discovered the engine of culture through 4chan or we're just trying to justify our shitposting.

Most writing (and speech) has many more than two levels of irony. Think about it. How often is what is meant directly expressed (0-irony), or expressed with only one layer of subversion (1-irony)? Actual language involves innumerable subtleties that go far beyond simple irony.

Irony is a tool, and it has two main uses: a weapon of critique and a powerful justification.
On this site called 4chan, people like the phrase: to enjoy something unironically, and yet what they mean is that they enjoy it ironically. They use irony to keep distance from something they find contrarian to their worldview, yet still want to take in themself.
In our current information overload, schizophrenic world, it is near impossible to hold rigid opinions and views, and if one manages to, he still needs to incorporate all the information into one's system: it follows that the only way is to embrase contradictions of inner self, using irony to keep a semblance of solid structure.
But as with most things one comes to learn of this mechanism and makes it dysfunctional. One can not use irony as a way to keep distance if they do it purposefully, as "the distance" merges with the information it was supposed to protect from conflict with other information. A man believes in God and does drugs, so to solve this contradiction, he employs irony: he views both God and drugs "from the outside, peeking in the room", but this tool becomes more important than the contents of the room, and Irony gluttoniously devours both God and drugs.
To solve this, one may look at the distance from the distance itself: but this is just looking from the distance. Irony is not additive.

I think that's what you're misunderstanding. Noone seems to take anything seriously, and those that do seem to take things far too seriously and end up unwittingly being the butt of the joke. 4chan is not an engine of culture, it is the product of our culture, a cesspool of our lame viscous apathetic attitudes and perverse obsessions
