My friend gave me The Martian and I liked it well enough. I thought it was good to see some hard SF get noticed for a change over the usual space operas. Andy Weir isn't a genius or anything but he told a good story. I even liked the movie even though I don't really care about Matt Damon.

But shouldn't the success of The Martian be an inspiration to us that self publishing can be a legit way to making a living as an author? We don't need to be picked up by a publishing house or agency. And we don't need to write total trash like 50 Shades. At least The Martian isn't disguised fanfic. He did a lot of research and wrote a book based on real science. It wasn't some BDSM fantasy.
