Is stream of consciousness as a literary style dead? Is it still a viable way of writing a book or is it considered antiquated/cliched?

It's a great technique to get words on paper. In fact, I would probably argue the whole first draft should be some form of stream of consciousness.
But anyone who publishes anything stream of consciousness is a hack and using a bullshit copout to up their word count.
