As a canadian, I can only recognize the southern, texan, boston, and new york accent. aside from those, most american's have fairly neutral speech characteristics

They are usually slower, or as fast depending on your reading speed.
Some things are easier to get, or better when you hear it aloud.
It's also good for any mindless task where you can focus almost all of your attention on it.
It's nice to let your eyes rest as well, sometimes.
