hello /lit/,
could you please recommend some books about jesters or jester-like characters? or just any books featuring such characters. thank you very much in advance
skyrim
King Lear
The Cask of Amotillado
Not OP, but this is also of much interest to me as well. And if you know about any books featuring similar characters; such as mimes, clowns, or ventriloquists, I would be very pleased to hear about them.
No, but I do know a book about jests, though. A single and continuing one, in fact.

Is it your diary?
The Stranger is pretty funny.
>>7844406
is it that damned banana again?
>>7844406
i have heard that this jest never ends.
>>7844448
the mathematicians are still out on it
Farseer trilogy and following trilogies has a important Fool in them
>>7844377
read simplicissimus by von Grimmelshausen
its from the 17th century and about a jester like character who, at one point in his life, also is a jester.
>>7844377
The most fun book I've read this year, though definitely not the best.
The protagonist of Homestuck, Gamzee, is literally the best-written jester ever.
Yorick, although we never see him, Shakespeare uses his character as an avatar for the return of York in the History Plays.

meh. The story-line for the dark brotherhood could have been better, but it was good for what it was.
Shit, this reminds me of a book about a jester and a boy who travel across a country. the jester is a mentor to the boy and eventually they make their way to the capital and it turns out the boy is the rightful heir and the queen wants him killed. the jester is captured but i dont remember what happens after that.
does anyone know what im talking about?
>>7844687
awful story line. thieves guild was much better.
>>7844714
very interested in this. hope someone finds it
>>7844718
Please, both the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood quests were far better in Oblivion.
>>7844391
Isn't midsummer night dream the one with the fucking fairy jesters fucking with the humans all summer long?
>>7844761
That mutilated corpse hanging from the ceiling in Oblivion, that head that you find, stealing THE item in the series in the ultimate heist. For how much Oblivion sucked over Morrowind, it sure got those two quest-lines right.
>>7844732
nice. thanks anon. thought id never find it.
>>7844725
it was a childrens novel but i remember it being a bit mature when i read it. i was probably around 11. i cant say if it was good or not though.
>>7844767
Fairies yes. Comic shenanigans abound in that play, but there is no jester or fool in the sense of someone whose job is to amuse aristocats.
>>7844405
>>7844377
holy shit are you all me? Im so interested in this I have been writing a story on the subject for several years
>>7845464
have always wanted to write a book centered around a jester. what happens in yours? if you dont mind me asking
>>7845497
Its many jesters who live a code and have no idea how the outside world is. Don't want to give too much away. Hopefully will publish it soon
>>7845505
what? you gotta give us more than that. we want a proper synopsis. are you finished with it?
>>7845525
no im half done. The more I talk about it the more stupid it may sound and I can't fuck my shit up thinking its bad right now
>>7844448
You will be surprised
>>7845532
is it about a sort of guild of jesters? whats the time period? medieval, renaissance, modern?
how many pages is halfway?
it definitely sounds interesting.
>>7845543
>it definitely sounds interesting
well im glad you think so. You are kind. maybe I will talk about it more one day in another thread like this.
its basically a race of jesters born with thier own sets of rules and religion unfamiliar to the outside world. and itsfuture setting... sounds dumb I know but im trying to make it less
>Maybe I will talk about it more one day in another thread like thi$
Yep
>>7845556
Huh, I would've expected it to be faux medieval fantasy...
Other anon is right though, it does sound intriguing
>>7845588
at least its expecting than. I don't know if I should just imply it takes place in some unknown future or out right say it. Think subtle would be better.
>>7845556
The more you describe it, the more I want to read it!
>>7845635
Thanks I will keep at it then. maybe in a year or 2 you can. keep a look out for it. I will make a thread about it sometime with a clown/jester picture at some point like this one.
>>7845653
can i know the title, so i can look it up every now and then?
>>7844504
Indeed. A refreshing, fun little book.
>>7845712
The title will probably be Carousel. Or something similar/added
Till Eulenspiegel

Bartholomew Fair

This bande dessinee has a droll take on Pierrot mimes
twelfth night - feste, one of the best 'fools' there is
>>7844391
Where is there a jester or jester-like character in Cask of Amontillado?
>>7846467
Fortunato is literally dressed as a jester and plays the fool the entire time.
>>7844377
Hop-Frog.
The Dwarf by Pär Lagerkvist. Narrator and protagonist is a misanthrope dwarf at an Italian renaissance court. I remember a few times it was portraying and discussing the jester-role dwarfs often had in courts.
