I read religious material because I find it fascinating and I imagine the existential torture that I endure in the moment also existed in the fictional/real world of whatever I'm reading, and that the characters are all heroes fighting for the good to win, much like any action hero fights to stop the bad guy.
If this interests you, read shorter stories from religions if you can find them - Jonah and the Whale for instance, or any story from Hinduism because Hinduism is chock full of stories from what I hear.

Take a 50 minute walk. Come back home, make yourself some coffee and read either Tolstoy, Hemingway or Shakespeare. This won't cure your misery, but your mind will be clearer than before.
