LotR, although great, is still a generic good vs evil story.

On a very basic level, yes.
But there also the whole Germanic pseudo-myth stuff and Tolkien's fancy prose things and what not that make it so good.

Every story is good vs evil
@7835373
(you)
All good (plot) stories are generic
Hence the reading for plot meme
The use of 'Generic' when discussing literature is an incontrovertible proof of pleb-like thinking.

Not really, no. The "evil" is simply a necessity to drive the narrative forwards, so that the situations, scenes and events containing the real themes can emerge. LotR does not need "grey morality" to say the things it wants to say.
What people want from a classic story is a protagonist or protagonists having something at stake and/or struggling towards something, overcoming adversity to reach it, and learning&experiencing something valuable in the process. "Evil" is only one way to supply the adversity.
Shit writers don't get above right and think that "good versus evil" has inherent value. It doesn't, it's the things and themes that emerge from the struggle that do.

>Tolkien's fancy prose things
U mean his endless rip off of the King James Bible? Idk if his prose was all his.

>generic good vs evil story.
And what's wrong with that? Not every story has to be some edgy morally ambiguous crap.
