Pleb here. Never read a single philosophy book in my life. I want to read the Greeks, but I'm afraid just jumping into The Republic will discourage me. How do I into philosophy, /lit/?
Start with The Apology, you retarded fuck.

Ironically philosophy is the one place where you don't want to start with the Greeks. Start with Descartes' Meditation and Discourse.
Republic is babby tier, OP. It holds your hand through the entire process of navigating knowledge issues.
I'd say read it first tbqhfam
read the fucking sticky and fuck off

>not starting with The Crito
wow could you be more of a pleb?
Begin with the Babylonians.

Start with Thales.

Find an area of philosophical thought with relevance to your own life, find an author who touches on these topics, and read them with the knowledge that you are just reading the voice of one man among many, and that there is always another way to look at a thing.
Prescribing standard starter texts is all fine and good for academic courses, but probably won't instil you with a fiery passion for the subject.

Read Plato's smaller dialogues. The meno, crito, euthyphro, and phaeodo are pretty entry level. Read them once, quickly and broadly. Then twice more, deeply.
After that you can do more dialogues, or go into the republic or nichomachean ethics.
For modern philosophy, read...
>Descartes: Meditations 1-5. Stanford wiki page on rationalism
>Hume's epistemology, is/ought, problem of induction. Stanford wiki on empiricism.
>Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Critique's Stanford page.
after that you'll be able to interact with modern philosophy on your own interests.
Final tips
>Read charitably. Forget as many of your biases as possible.
>Read passages and even books multiple times; philosophy takes time to simmer
Just buy the Complete Plato and read it all in any order you want, keeping in mind that some are going to be better than others and make more sense as you get a fuller picture.
It's only ~1500 pages. If you can't get through it in say a week or two you're a casual and you honestly don't belong here.

Start with...
>I want to read the Greeks
You clever bastard.
I started with Meditations by Aurelius. Simple, direct, easy to digest.
Then I read Last Days of Socrates by Plato. Compiles Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo.
I plan on moving on to the Republic after I finish The Iliad and Odyssey.

>Phaedo
Phaedo is the one that did it for me (don't confuse with Phaedrus, although that one is fine too). I started liking philosophy after I read it. I gives me sweet nostalgia.

Nobody said Aristotle. Aristotle is useful to begin studying philosophy because he often reviews the opinions of his predecessors on any given subject. Problem is that Aristotle is boring as fuck.

what the fuck is "The Crito"?
Is there any point to reading philosophy if you've taken intro classes and generally get the idea of many arguments? I liked philosophy while I was in high school and didn't know shit about what I believed, but now that I have a pretty good handle on it and other arguments, I'm not sure I get why to pursue philosophy anymore.
>>7834246
Even if you generally know what you believe you can still read philosophy to discover new ideas from people you agree with. I can guarantee yoh will find new ideas not covered in your intro courses. You can also read philosophies you don't agree with so you can famialiarize yourself with other points of view.
pic related is modern philosophy
it must be, it's written by a philosopher. it says so right there in his profile header.
it says please read and share so that's what i'm doing. i know everyone here will appreciate it. you're welcome.
