Islam literally means submission to God; a Muslim is one who submits to God. In Islam, it is believed that all men are born Muslims and then diverge because as Goethe realized, we all are born in a state of submission to God.
The prevalence of moral decadence that has led men to all but forget God today was probably incomprehensible to those men of understanding so it came naturally to them that a man lives and dies in a state of submission to God, that is a Muslim.
Is this not more beautiful and comprehensible than the idea that if a man dies without being baptized, he is doomed to eternal torment? Is it not exemplary of the infinite goodness and capacity to forgive of God, that a man need only submit to Him to be accepted into His good grace? I hope this helped to answer your question brother and I encourage you and all else to read up on Islam so that you may get an idea as to why myself and millions of others consider ourselves to be neither more nor less than Muslims.
