Hey, /lit/ let's talk languages. What languages do you know? How do you know them? Then post the shit out of any and all online resources you have
>Languages I know:
English, German, half way fluent in reading french
>How?
German from moving to the country (study abroad)
English cus born here
>Resources
Duolingo, dict.cc for dictionary in german and leo.de for pronunciation in German when it gets doubtful. Honestly, I also absolutely love the Der Spiegel for keeping my German sharp.

I know of most languages.

I only speak Danish, German, English, and a bit of Swedish and Norwegian, though.

>how
Scandinavian faggot. Was taught German and English in school
>>
>>7799005
why so many language threads?

I agree with the redirect but you need to remember that learning languages to read literature is a different process from learning them holistically. That's why I'm posting on here.
>>
>Languages I know:
English, Fully fluent in French as a second language
>How?
Decided I'd do a degree in French and sociology for shits and giggles
>Resources
Online dictionaries such as word reference and Larousse. My grammar book from college. My bescherelle which I use to look up verb tables along with the books I read to pick up grammar. I have a job where I have to speak to French Canadians and my colleagues are French so I get to practise that way too.
English because I'm Irish. I'm pretty sure it was preordained for me to learn French because I'm going to become the 21st century's Beckett

100% would love to hear how you learned it too
-int's guide is pretty silent in that regard
>>
>languages I know
Dutch (mother tongue), English and Italian. I studied translation in university and now I'm working as a literary translator. I'm pretty confident I'm near-native level in both of them.

I know French and German as well, but my level in those is more talking-to-qts-in-bars, I'm not fluent enough to do anything useful with them.

That's pretty cool, how much money do you make translating?

>Languages I know:
English and Latin
>How?
Learnr Latin at high school. Started it mostly because scores for the subject scaled up the most, but I ended up enjoying it.
>Resources
The Cambridge Latin course is good for learning the language, and after that we just reffered to a few books including the Cambridge Latin Grammar and The Latin Language by the Scottiah Classics group. The Persues Digital Library is good for finding translations of latin texts too, although the translations tend to be a bit more liberal than literal.
>>
I know English, French and Spanish.
Internet and immigrant parents who learned English at home, french because I'm from Quebec and Spanish cause of my mother.
I used to have a tiny grasp of Farsi as well but I lost it, four languages growing up was a mess and even now I find my syntax has a lot of issues in French and Spanish, otherwise I speak 'em fluently and I'm capable of reading decently. I tried learning Japanese but I got overwhelmed by the lack of structure in my process and I found using just the genki textbook was not consolidating anything in me.
I'm thinking of starting Russian instead though
>>
>languages I know
-fluent tier; English and Dutch
-able to understand but not speak/write properly tier: German, French, Japanese in that order
-meh tier: Latin/Ancient Greek
>how
Well I was born in the Netherlands and have lived there my entire life but I have spent most of my time consuming English (language not country) media like video games and teLIEvision and then later on literature.
the rest I learned in highschool with the exception of Japanese which I just learned for fun.
>Recources
just live the language my friend, start out by learning A LOT words (ANKI is a lifesaver) and basic grammar, then just start reading/watching movies until you get a feel for it, don't quit you'll get it eventually.
>>
>Languages I know
fluent in italian, german, english and croatian.

know some portuguese, french and hindi (around B1 in all of them)

can read and write in latin

>How?
was brought up speaking italian and croatian, learned english cause I couldn't find italian translations of stuff I wanted to watch or play. Started learning german in high school, and couldn't speak it for shit until I got an austrian gf, who got me hooked on a lot of german language media.

I learned all the ~B1 languages by first using lingq to get me started, and then watching movies, reading and doing stuff like setting my cellphone to be in that language.

Learned latin in school and spent some free time reading Catullus (edgy)

>resources
if you're learning from scratch always start with lingq. It basically simulates language immersion, but at whichever level you pick. Other than that, just watch and read whatever you are interested in even if it's above your current level of comprehension. You need to see the same word about 15-20 times in different contexts in order to naturally learn it.
