If you've ever liked a Beatles song's extra flourishes, the classical-sounding bits, the Penny Lane horn, that was Martin. "The fifth beatle" is an epithet that has been applied to many men, but it was truest in Martin's case. He substantively changed and enhanced the basic song structures in the studio.
