"Ah, Plato, that semite by instinct." - F. Nietzsche

Was Nietzsche an anti-semite?

Only once Foucault, Butler, Said, Fanon, and Derrida are wiped from the collective memory.

It's obvious that being gay is some kind of burgeois degeneracy

Platos ideas lead straight to the construction of Nazi warplanes. And I'm quoting Heidegger here.

Proof that right wingers don't even dare to read. The Republic alone is sufficient to trigger Nazis and others.

Think you're attempting to insult the wrong side of the spectrum. OP wants to remove Plato from schools. Why would the right want that if the erroneously believed Plato espoused their ideals?
>>
>>7789423
Is there an English translation yet?

Not sure, I read some of it in German. But I can guess you can google the most controversial stuff and find some english translation.

Deal?

I think that anon interpreted OP as a false flagging right-winger who indirectly tries to claim Platon for his cause, because no one on 4chan actually holds the opinion stated in the opening post.

>>
>>7790081
Anon seems to be exaggerating for effect. Unless there's really something in the notebooks a bit more explicit, but probably all that's being referred to is Heidegger's "History of Being" that traces the obscuring of our understanding of Being to Plato's apparent shift from some early more interesting Greek concept, to eidos, and the reduction of truth (aletheia--unconcealment) to visual correspondence. Mind, in the 50s, Heidegger gets an inkling that he was wrong about Plato in certain respects, and just about admits so in his essay, "Hegel and the Greeks".

Plato is the most influential philosopher ever to have lived. Furthermore, you also wouldn't have universities as we conceive of them without him.

It is important to study him though a historical lens. People who would read something as ancient as Plato's work, unable to situate it in the context of its creation, and take offense that it doesn't mesh with their contemporary progressive/liberal agenda are shortsighted and stupid.

Plato's writings also have literary merit that place his works alongside other classics of literature.

I hope, for your sake, that this is bait.

No, he should not. I don't really like his dismissal of the Sophists, but other than that he is very worth reading. The 'philosophy is nothing but a series of footnotes on Plato' meme is not entirely inaccurate.

But is his thought not important in itself? I'd think that'd be the more valuable reason to read him. If we read him and merely did so with the motive of understanding him as a figure of his time, then we've already dismissed the substance of his thought. Wouldn't the more fruitful procedure be to at least provisionally or tentatively take it that Plato has something to teach his readers *first*?

Absolutely. I was bringing up the importance of context with respect to some of his more controversial opinions that apparently might offend a modern liberal arts student (in response to OPs topic).

His thoughts are the most compelling reason to read his works, considering he is one of the greatest philosophers period (arguably the greatest).
>>
>>7789485
No. He didn't. He looked down on anti semites. Even wrote about how much he loathed Wagner for his antisemitism.
>>
>>7789250
Start with Confessions of a Mask, then read Spring Snow, Runaway Horses, The Golden Temple, and The Decay of the Angel (which has the GOAT title for a novel)
>>
>>7794478
>All that has been done on earth against "the noble," "the powerful," "the masters," "the rulers," fades into nothing compared with what theJewshave done against them; the Jews, that priestly people, who in opposing their enemies and conquerors were ultimately satisfied with nothing less than a radical revaluation of their enemies' values, that is to say, an act of themost spiritual revenge...

Anyway, I'm not saying that Nietzsche was a full blown Kristallnacht antisemite but it's quite possible to find in the (christian) conservative line of german philosophical history, starting with german idealism, over to Nietzsche, Ernst, Jünger, Schmitt to Heidegger latent antisemtic motives. Of course one has to differentiate between the different types of antisemitism these people showed.
