So, I've just recently self published my own fiction novel, mostly to see if I could, and also for the challenge. Are there any other authors (Self published or otherwise?) who would like new audiences for their work? Post details here. I'll definitely read new work if i get a chance.

What's it about op?

Was writing a story about writer's block that at the moment is one hold due to.... you guessed it.
Worked on this in the mean time.
It's about a teenager who has the ability to feel the pain and negative emotions of others. She is victim to this ability one night and subsequently arrested for the murder of a young woman. Over the course of the book she attempts to discover the killer, only to be thrown into a mystery that leads to further violence.

Doesn't sound very realistic. Post an excerpt please.

Only have pdf file to hand, i'll share the link, there is a preview there:

Pic related. A very basic summary is that it's about how various people react to/are affected by this one guy's death. There's more to it than that though.

Do you have a link, i'll pick it up if i can

Wasn't there a movie like this?

I vaguely recall it. Someone dies or something and then the movie goes into how this affects several people's lives in one day.

post an excerpt op

I only heard about it after I finished this. You're probably thinking of Enter The Void. It's not really the same though.

Great fucking movie though

In the same humorous vain as A Confederacy of Dunces and the movie Falling Down with Michael Douglas, it's about a man with a short temper navigating the ins and outs of everyday life. Blowing small matters out of proportion, dealing with the loneliness that accompanies being an asshole, the upbringing that created him, etc. I've posted excerpts for critique that are universally liked on here. You can preview the first chapter I believe.

>>7788856
That looks damn good, i'll definitely check it out

How long have you been on /lit/ OP?

I found your twitter and you seem like a complete normie dunce.

Congratulations on being published, Anon!

I'm still trying to find an agent.
>>
>>7789162
Thanks, man! Finding an agent was the worst part of the entire process. Took about 6 years. But once I found one, the book sold relatively quickly and the editorial process was great. Don't get discouraged.
>>
>>7789146

>associating yourself with 4chan

congrats on the publication tho!
>>
>>7789168

SIX years to find an agent, holy shit

how many queries did you send out?

I'm guessing you had to rework your query several times? did you have to rework the novel in that time too?
>>
>>7789171
If I ever become a famous author I'm going to come back to 4chan and bask in adulation from the rest of you losers.

Finished the book in 2008. Queried extensively for a year and a half. Had some interest but no one wanted to sign me. At that time, adult-themed fantasy was still sort of a hard sell.

Then I put the MS away, went to grad school and Game of Thrones blew up on TV. So when I finished school, I dusted off the MS, sent it around, found an agent in about 3 months, reworked the MS, sent it out to publishers and got offers within the year.

>>7789252
I'm not him, but that takes several days to set up and that's only if you more or less understand what you're doing in terms of the layout and formatting. Unless you just pay someone to format your files for you, though if you're self-publishing you most likely don't want to spend money on things like that.

>OK, to begin with the book has so structure, not even to mention a proper grammar and flow of information. It is just a constant dialogue about weed and some fillers in between of the protagonist getting from one weed station to the other. I am not going to write anything about the author since the book explains his lack of rational reasoning. Out of 5 stars I would give this book -5, but since the lowest I can give is 1 star, I decided I have no other choice.

I remember once someone posted screenshots of pages of the book. It's actually barely organized into paragraphs. If I recall correctly it reads a lot like a screenplay.

I've thought about self-publishing because no one will publish my fiction.

I have several erotic novels under a pseudonym but that's just to pay the bill.

There's no coherent argument against self-publishing itself these days when most of what's getting "officially" published is complete garbage too. The only real difference is that it's garbage that an agent or editor decided would be profitable.
>>
>>7791083
The argument in favor of being traditionally published is that you get to employ all the resources a major publishing house has at its disposal in the promotion of your book. It's easier for your work to be noticed, and for it to see widely, if it's traditionally published.

There's just too much chaff among the wheat in self-publishing. If you think most of what's officially published is garbage, that's nothing compared to the overwhelming percentage of self-published stuff that's completely, utterly terrible.
>>
>>7791091
That's my point though, being traditionally published is better because of the resources you're given, but as an institution, the publishing industry itself is a terrible arbiter of quality.

I'd say the percentages are equal, it's only the numbers themselves that aren't because literally anyone can self-publish.
>>
>>7791072
Again, that was a very rudimentary summary of it. The similarities to those books are superficial at best.
>>

Riddle me this, self-published writers.

Why should I read any of your random whatevers, when I can read Japanese pornographic text-heavy presentations about dating cute anime girl?
>>
>>7791094
Well yeah, but the alternative is to drop your masterpiece that you've sweated and bled for onto Amazon for 99 cents and hope that it miraculously catches fire. Fuck that.
>>
>>7791103
No one's saying you shouldn't try, just that if you're rejected a million times you might as well self-publish. If you're worried about it ruining your future prospects for traditional publication, just use a pseudonym.

It's a matter of personal preference to some extent, but to me, having your masterpiece collecting dust in your attic for decades is a lot worse than putting it out there yourself even if the odds are stacked against you.
>>
>>7791120
If you're rejected a million times, you should write something better.

Charles Johnson wrote seven books before he even bothered to try and publish one of them.
>>
>>7791134
It has nothing to do with how well you write, or how good your ideas are, and everything to do with how marketable what you've written is, or how marketable you are yourself.
>>
>>7790250
steven suttie bro, this actually has like 246 amazon reviews
>>
>>7791144
>It has nothing to do with how well you write, or how good your ideas are
>>
>>7788855
Nah. It is visually pretty impressive, but fails on every other level. The writing is awful and the acting mechanical, but what really ruins the movie is the pacing.

The whole thing panders so hard to a degenerate, pseudointellectual subculture that it's difficult for anyone else to enjoy.

Not only that, but they never were. People often forget that a lot of the books that are considered classics or masterpieces now were rejected over and over before they got published. Some weren't even commercially or critically successful.
