Stand up comedy is for people who can't transpose their humor into literature
Really the worst form of entertainment
>>7784388
i just like to draw things that i find interesting and/or beautiful
Came here looking for source. I'll come back again later. Hopefully you all will have found it by then.

not everyone wants to create literature

This is indispensable if you're at all interested in the stand-up process. It contains transcripts of several of Lee's shows, heavily annotated with commentary and anecdotes about how the material was developed. The routines are interspersed with autobiographical chapters about Lee's difficult return to stand-up after his retirement in the early 00s. It really is a great, valuable book.
Who is /lit/s fav stand ups????
Trick question this is the official list.
Norm Macdonald
Bill Burr
Louis CK
Patrice O'Neal
Doug Stanhope
Maria Bamford
Mitch Hedberg
No debate.

Shit list.
Norm, Steven Wright, Andy Kaufman, Pryor, Mitch Hedberg, Dave Attell.
Born Standing Up by Steve Martin is the single best book about standup I've ever encountered. It's fascinating and super emotional.

>a taxi man said something racist to me...wasn't he....racist
Literally 'current year' tier shit.
A R I S T O P H A N E S

Bill Burr
Patrice O'Neal
Paul Virzi
Joe Bartnik
Joe deRosa
Jason Lawhead
I have a feeling /lit/ wouldn't like Fran Lebowitz, but I think she's funny as hell
just find books by comedians or television writers, or books containing interviews with comedians or television writers
don't read "how to" books, unless you really want to be a hack.
>>7786992
>add in Stewart Lee

>Stand up comedy is for people who can't transpose their humor into literature
This.
Next they'll say that they enjoy other equally unproductive exercises like "socializing with others". What a pack of sorry philistines.

no fun allowed
man stand up comedy is cool af imo, go to an open mic night one day (in a major city (new york for example)) and you'll understand why stand up is so cool
UCB Comedy Manual is currently the best improv comedy resource
My tops are:
Bill Burr
Demetri Martin
Emo Philips
George Carlin
Louie CK
Mitch Hedberg
Neil Hamburger
Patrice O'Neal
Steven Wright
Tim Heidecker
I think Hicks is okay too. Don't think he's that funny, but I like some of the things he says.

>all men
>all but one are white men
>>7787989
I've tried hard to find good female comedians and all I get are period jokes. If you have any to recommend then go for it.
>>7787991
joan rivers, maria bamford, natasha leggero, tig notaro
sarah silverman but she really does have a lot of period jokes
>>7787997
all shit
face it, white men are the only ones who contribute anything to any medium
asians as well
>>7783966
I find David Sedaris very funny (yes I'm a homo)
>>7789901
Carlin goes in the same pile as Hicks, Stewart Lee, John Oliver, etc. It all comes down to "I can't believe those evil republicans disagree with me! How dare they!"
>>7787012
Maria is not doing interesting things? She is one of the most unique stand ups I have ever seen, male or female. I understand she can be off-putting at first, but keep watching and you will see she has substance.
>>7789901
I have very mixed feelings about Carlin. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes just an angry cunt.
>>7790396
What's her sense of humour?
>>7787027
>He doesn't get it.
>>7790416
Her ability to perfectly imitate annoying people. She is very good at getting laughs in a very uncomfortable place. Very dark mental illness material. Never seen a stand up like her. Incredibly bold performer.
Go watch her instead of asking me to explain her to you. You have eyes and ears, hopefully a sense of humor too.
>>7790034
>Stewart Lee
>"I can't believe those evil Republicans disagree with me"
Maybe you should try actually watching one his routines sometime.
Pear cider, jungle canyon rope bridges, his resemblance to Ratko Mladic... have got fuck all to do with politics.
Hopefully he doesn't od on bezos.
>>7790034
I have literally never see Carlin do that. And, yes, JO sometimes does that, but not often.
>>7787969
Absolute shit. Demetri Martin is unfunny autism, Carlin is for fedoras, Louis CK just bitches and is unfunny, fuck the rest
Tom Holt
>>7791078
calm down billy
>>7786589
Anyone got any places to start with norm. I watch a fair bit of comedy but from a glancing look at norm I was not impressed.
>>7791657
YouTube clips. Norms best is off book.
>>7791657
His "Me doing standup" special is a good place to start. All of his Dennis Miller appearances radio & tv are gold.
His own Norm Macdonald Live show. The late show compilation videos & Stern appearances. Sports show with Norm Macdonald.
Let's open this thread up a little bit. Anybody know any good books on Comes Comedy. Like how it works. What makes people laugh?

Why did you guys stop forcing Confederacy of Dunces?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3IMdOguZaU
Here you go: literally 2:00:00+ of jokes. If you don't love the guy by the end of it I don't know what to say to you.
>>7784385
It's a way of bringing your ideas to people who might not read very much, if at all.
>>7784385
By that logic, literature is for people who can't transpose their desire to interact into actual human engagement.
Oh wait.
>>7790034
If you think Carlin or Hicks fell into the left/right shit, you reeeeally need to go back and watch again.
>>7786589
It's this + Hicks, Carlin, old Steve Martin & Eddie Murphy, Dylan Moran, Chappelle & Patton Oswalt for me.
Tig Notaro and Ricky Gervais I consider clever and OK, but not that funny.
Eugene Mirman is best
>>7790034
Haha wow. If anything carlin can be criticized for being too right wing although like any good artist he transcends the paradigm
>>7783966
Surprised to see no Colin Quinn. He's a literary guy and has the best twitter of all time. His book was pretty funny. Here's a video of him completely bombing and still being awesome, one of my favorite sets of all time.

>his resemblance to Ratko Mladic
this one always kills me
>>7791985
Pls respond. I don't wanna make another thread
>>7792946
>Carlin
>Right-wing
He was anti-war, pro-choice, hated conservatives, called Bush a fascist, and said that wealthy businesses own the government. That's hardly right-wing.
