why do /lit/ dislike this man? Is it because you think atheist is fedora, i think most of the guys here are fedora tier anyway. I personally believe in a higher power but not like christian describes it.
>>
Atheism is not fedora in itself, but just look at the man's twitter and tell me he's not a complete fedora-lord.
>>
Because I kind of admire religious fundamentalists.
>telling boys that when they masturbate an angel cries
>saying that satan planted dinosaur bones underground with a straight face

Where do they come up with this stuff?
>>
>>7761810
because strawmen arguments.
>>
>>7761825
pretty much this.

i don't care if you're christian or atheist but both sides have insufferable tantrum throwers.

believe what you believe. let other people believe what they want. it's super fucking unlikely that yelling about others stupidity is going to change anyone's mind.
>>
>>7761855
well religon is making people kill eachother and wage war
>>
>>7761855
Neither sides are stupid. They've both come up with some brilliant material
>>
He's a complete fucking narcissist with such a repulsive sense of unwarranted self-worth it honestly makes me kind of angry just thinking about it. He wrote an autobiography and half of it was just about all the conferences he's been to. Ew.

I don't hate him as a whole, i don't even hate his ideologies, what i hate about him is how stubborn he is
Honestly, i've never seen a more close minded person in my entire life, i just feel he should give some people more of a chance instead of going 'HURR RELIGION SIT DOWN'
The same with the religious people that do it, hear someone out, you might learn a thing or two.
Personally, i'm neither religious nor athiest, so it's not a bias on the beliefs side

That's not religion, you dolt. That's leaders using religion for what they want. Religion has both good and bad side effects and if you paid attention historically, it has better good side effects than pure Atheism would have.

I know i am, i haven't really bothered thinking about why everything exists and i sure as shit wont be starting anytime within the next few months.
Crisis scheduled for later, will report back with bald spots because i ripped my own hair out trying to figure out why everything is how it is

thats religion. its easy to controll sheep if they belive in god and you say he want you kill your neighbour because he is homosexuell

>>
>>7761977
Shut up, faggot. Religion is laws that were made to value life and each other to a degree. Has it been perfect? No. But it's far better than an Atheist society would have been - historically speaking. It has kept morals in check. Now fuck off to Reddit.
>>
>>7761990
China is a strictly secular, atheistic society, and it has been the world's longest running continuous civilization, and overall, most stable.

>>
>>7762018
True, but he's just one man, so catholicism still causes less damage than Chinese atheism overall.
>>
>>7762024
It's been secular since at least Confucius, newfag. And overall, China has been the least turbulent zone of civilization.
>>
>>7762004
It has been Buddhist and used Confucianism. Those stand in for the morality implemented by religion.
>>7762010
Low quality b8. Fuck off. Religion is philosophic morals at a level that everyone can understand.
>>
>>7761939

That was protestantism, they were pretty crazy yo.

>also, implying that most scientists weren't aristocrats and that any 'witch burnings' or similar were anything at all compared to the French and Russian revolutions
>>
>>7762038
no it isnt. its the man-made need for morals to dictate society. Look up the old testament, its brutal as fuck. but as society progresses, morals progress and leave outdated philosophies behind. But clinging on to some law that may have worked in its own time is a fallacy in an of itself
>>
>>7762038
Which aren't really religions in the Western conception. Confucianism is really a philosophy and does not have any gods. Buddha taught agnosticism. Neither were state religions, and both always been minority philosophies in China. China's sense of morality never depended on a conception of gods.

You're just proving my point. I'm neither atheist nor agnostic for the record. But get real.
>>
>>7761977
or maybe people have always wanted to kill their homosexual neighbour because of how group dynamics treats a minority 'other', and religion was just used as an excuse to do so?

All this 'religion causes evil' is lowbrow as fuck
>>
>>7762059
As much as philosophers and Atheists may circle jerk over being intelligent; there will never be a time where the average man can properly choose the true philosophic path for himself and evil people will always need the fear of pain and torture in the afterlife to hold back their desire to commit unjust acts.
>>
>>7762070
The point was that while they were not religions, they provided accessible morals to the people.
>>
>>7761866
go to bed Dawkins
>>
>>7762080
Well no shit? You're definitely new.
>>
>>7762077
actually a strong rule of law ensures that, not some outdated moral code. its why religious people commit crimes easily in countries with no centralized authority.
>>
>>7762090
I said they stand in for religion, you dip. Go back to whatever ahiteheap you came from. If you could read then you would be able to understand that. Now fuck off.
>>
>>7762098
But the fear of hell and damnation has stopped crimes. It's up to everyone which road they take but to say that religion and religious moral codes weren't necessary once is foolish atleast. To say that people will be able to think more rationally than they are now or have been is also kind of foolish imho.
>>
>>7762101
I think you were trying to cover your ass after making a mistake. Occam's razor. There's no point in claiming they substitute for religion, when they're philosophies.
>>
>>7762123
Agreed. And to state the obvious, morals do not necessarily derive from religion.

There were 3 "scientists" reprimanded because of their theories regarding natural philosophy (aka science as you pleb call it).

let me guess, youre one of those people that desperately clings on to religion as a beacon of hope and tries in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary to reconcile it with reality. people will higher degrees of faith are a major chunk of our problems so your thinking also is indirectly an inherently authoritarian one.

No, that's pretty much all atheists
>>
>>7762123
The point is that they were taught at a level that everyone could understand. The point is that most philosophy is too complex for the average person and those philosophies + religions are what gets the main ideas through.
>>7762132
Yes, I am Authoritarian. How dare me. I should be like you and convince people that what they do and say is wrong and force them to turn away. How lovely and Anti-Authoritarian.

"kek" is not an argument, so my premise remains. Natural philosophy is not science, of course, I explained it with "... as you call it".
>>
>>7762098
>actually a strong rule of law ensures that
And here we see what the modern secularist uses to replace his religion: statism.
>>
>>7762156
I wasn't making an argument.
>>
>>7762177
I don't know what you were doing ..
>>
>>7762150
But they can't even be considered religions so much as cultural systems. Calling them religions is a Western projection. You might as well be calling a whale a kind of fish.
>>
>>7762173
Statism, Atheism, Egalitarianism, feminism and socialism. all pillars of the same twisted liberal religion. Christianity was way more logical and healthy than liberalism.

>Statism, Atheism, Egalitarianism, feminism and socialism
>no "race mixing" or "usury"
Keep chugging them blue pills mate*

*cuck
>>
>>7762191
This is true. The point is that any of these Cultural codes that easily state morals and try to bring man and the natural world together aren't inherently bad as they have done many good things. Evennstuff like Buddhism has caused harm but that's not the main focus. In the future, the focus should be on seeing the good things caused by these moral codes and building off of them, instead of just throwing away religion and Eastern philosophy.

Well that may be the case, you still don't actually believe in the shit do you.

Because the book misrepresents all theology and philosophy at once. Not to say that Dawkins is an idiot, but you shouldn't take him seriously when he speaks of anything that is not biology.
>>
>>7761866
Yes, there have been wars over religion. There are also wars about borders, values, politics, money, and even emu overpopulation. Violence isn't exclusive to religion.
>>
>>7762581
>Not to say that Dawkins is an idiot, but you shouldn't take him seriously when he speaks of anything that is not biology

What makes him hate religion so much? Hasn't he written bio books before and other stuff not related to religion?
Did a priest rape him as a kid or does he know that hating on religion is the best way to make money off angry teens?

If the latter is true that's pretty sad. He's no better than John Green or any other YA writer who is exploiting the youth.

Atheism is the novelty t-shirt of beliefs in the same way existentialism is the insufferable white guy wth dreadlocks of philosophy.

What could Dawkins possibly write an entire book about when it comes to the non-existence of God?

"I know that God is not real because there is no proof of it, therefore I am correct and you are wrong."

What the fuck else could he possibly add that doesn't become autistic rambling?
