The most successful GoodReads group is a feminist coffee table appreciation society.

GoodReads thread? Do we even want to use this site anymore? What are you currently reading? Your target for this year? Etc, etc.

> biggest book group on site
> only read two books
>>
it's rym for books, only with far more stupid teenagers. what else is there to use?
>>
>>7753856
We don't really have much choice for literature-based communities…
>>
>>7753856
Just stay with the /lit/ crowd that don't meme and you're still in good hands with goodreads.
>>
No. That's stupid. That would be like not coming to /lit/ because you don't enjoy one of the other 4chan boards that you never have to visit.

Most people here don't use goodreads for the community anyway.
>>
I'm one of their members
>>
>>7753872
Like who?

Most profiles people post in these threads have complete meme profiles on that site.
>>
https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/29831737-pinkyivan
Currently reading Resurrection by Tolstoy, Silence by Shusaku Endo and Ethics, History of moral Thought by Peter Kreeft
I just ordered a used Kobo reader and assuming it works my goal is to read all of Plato and Aristotle from what I have left and Between Light and Shadow by Marc Aramini. Also Book of the Short Sun and maybe get around finishing Moby Dick.
>>
>>7753873
This. I use Goodreads more for keeping up to date with what I've read, my book collection and the few friends on my friends list to see what they're reading or interested in. I don't review outside of giving star ratings.
>>
>>7753878
Really? I've not come across meme-teens on Goodreads. Most people I know on that site from /lit/ are open to recommendations and discussion.

Currently reading Moby Dick. Actually really enjoying it so far but I know I'm still in the early stage of the book.

In fairness, she started the group in January and they plan on reading a book a month (imo that's a slow pace but I understand that it's meant to be a casual group). As long as they actually read classics of feminist literature (The Color Purple is a good start), then they're OK in my book, even though I'm not a feminist. I'm just kinda indifferent to it.

I bet a lot of people only joined her group because she's Emma Watson, too. You get those types thinking they're close to celebrities online like that.
>>
>>7753882
I'm already friends with you but please de-meme your profile pick dude.
>>
I can rate, store and find new books to read. That's all I need.
>>
>>7753952
Fuck no this is the most landmark pepe lit has ever made.
Also I used to have some other pictures, but nah, seeing them wasn't nearly as satisfying.
>>
I use it for keeping track of what I plan to read and what I've already read. Don't really have any "friends" on the site because I really don't give a shit.

Did look around the site once and was extremely disappointed by the community.

Goodreads is huge, and most readers in general are women. If you are going to the goodreads top lists for your reading you will eat shit, but if you have like 50-60 /lit/ friends you will get some good recommendations. Just dont talk to each other, its like a gay bathhouse in a middle class community.
>>
>>7753878
Just post in the goodreads threads, accept friends, and scroll through feeds to see what is being read.

currently reading "The Adventurous Simplicissimus" and I really enjoy it. Next will be either "Notes from the Underground" or "No Country for Old Men"

goodreads is for the idiots that came from /mu/.

Nobody cares about that facebook.

quite untrue, for the last 6 years on new years all the neets post their reading challenges and call each other dirty plebs before jerking off and going to bed before the ball drops.

You used to be able to browse local goodreads users by gender and miles from your location, they removed it tho ;_;

She made a speech at the UN about how feminism is really secular humanism, and then got shit on by extremists on tumblr.

Her great contribution to society has already passed her by, and it was as a child wizard.
>>
>>7754384
> Hollywood actress and united nations ambassador
> booming social life and professional career
> only wants to read a book a month

That's actually more than most average people read in their lifetimes outside of education. Just a shame she limits herself to feminist literature rather than reading the classics.
>>
>>7754437
not even a full wizard but a filthy fuckin mudblood, it's like she has nothing worthy to contribute ever

Got to agree with this. There is some memeing, but it's usually done in the review, and it's done well. Anyway, it's mostly a way of keeping track of what you've read and what you'd like to read.

One example from Crito who recently reviewed the frogs by Aristophanes:

"Herakles: You like that stuff?
Dionysos: It's absolutely dreamy, man.
Herakles: It's bilge, it's awful. Nobody knows it better than you
Dionysos: "Rule not my mind. Thine own is thy mind. Rule thou it."
Herakles: No, really, it does seem the most awful slop to me.

Dionysos: ...Tell me... the quickest way to hades...
Herakles: ...You need a footstool and a rope. Go hang yourself.

Am I on /lit/ right now?"

Anyway, here's mine.

I don't understand how to utilize GoodReads, everything is rated 3.7+ and half of the reviews read like they're written by cult members.
>>
>>7754903
Yeah, this is a problem I've realised. Everything I've read is 4 or 5 because why the fuck would I waste my time reading a shitty book. This kind of makes the reviews worthless...
>>
>>7754903
I use it to catalog and get tangential recommendations.

hi
>>
>>7755092
thats not what its for. The recommendation engine runs off of a ton of variables like country written, gender of author, themes, subject matter, fiction/nonfiction/poetry, etc. When its based on your books it gives good recs.

Also, recommendations from other /lit/ "friends" you pick up

I'm also reading Moby Dick, my man. How are you finding it so far? I'm personally loving it and I think it might be a new favourite.

>>7755595
As noted previously in this thread and others, goodreads review avgs are worth nothing. Individual reviews may be good, but mostly its for tracking your books and snickering at the attempts of other /lit/erati to look patrician
