How many masterpiece have do you reckon have gone entirely unknown because of publishers?

Joyce for example went through years of struggle getting Dubliners published and his later stuff only arguably got published because of his connections. This is a guy who is central to canon and wrote some of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century.

Does anybody have any good Joyce backgrounds? Preferably in a good resolution and and eye-patch era Joyce.

If it wasn't for based Brod, we would never have most of Kafka's work

Memoir-chan's brilliant 6 volume memoir is going to go unpublished and it's almost certainly a masterpiece

Yeah, if I recall correctly, Ezra pound pretty much got him published. Similarly, Sherwood Anderson got Faulkner published, so who knows desu. Probably tons of great would-be books out there that either no publisher will accept or the author isn't interested in publishing.

why does he wear the eye-patch?

Sylvia Beach is underrated on this board

barring Gertrude Stein she was probably the single most important cultural conduit for Modernist writers. She never gets any credit for sticking her neck out when she published Ulysses; even >>7750205 this anon gives sole credit to Ezra Pound.

Most people neglect to mention that she brokered a very favorable publishing deal for Joyce (again, pertaining to Ulysses) and he thanked her by stabbing her in the back.

Ya, because he got Dubliners and Portrait published. There's no Ulysses without that.
I'm not denying her importance.
How did Joyce stab her in the back?

>Sylvia’s devotion to modern literature was so deep that when James Joyce’s novel Ulysses was declared too pornographic to be published, Sylvia put her own money and reputation at risk to see it in print. It was an extraordinary project and a complex book, which Joyce continued to alter as the type was being set. Sylvia lent Joyce money as he was writing and bore all of the costs to get it published and distributed in the US where it was initially banned. Despite Sylvia’s loyalty to Joyce and his work, she was never repaid for her emotional or financial investment. In fact, when Joyce was offered a $45,000 contract from Random House, he forgot Sylvia completely.

She deserves sympathy, but characterizing this with "being stabbed in the back" is a tad dtamstic.

Perhaps it is. I won't deny I have a soft spot for Beach (and the 1920s ex-pat scene in general) so that's probably what was driving my initial posting. The woman helped edit Ulysses for God's sake, and considering how many people on this board read or pretend to read it, you think she'd get a bit more notice.
>>
>>7751306
I think that's warranted. Have you been to the store(s)?
>>

I wish. I'm supposed to go to Paris with friends later this year, hopefully I'll make it over there.
