Dear "Look, I'm still doing my projections" Lad,

While I understand your lack of reading comprehension, this is the lietarture board. Hence, even if you feel somewhat disjointed by not being able to socialize in a bookshelf thread, there's no need to be mad at other anons enjoying themselves and recommending some books. After all, I see you are not misbehaving, it's just autism.

My advice stands still,

/lit/
>>
>>7746777
Why? He can still compare the differences between the English versions. Also some of those copies have Italian text facing the English I'm pretty sure. I have the Pinsky Inferno and that was the case.
>>
>>7746462
>the anatomy of melancholy

I am willing to bet nobody on /lit/ has read this book even though it seems real neat in the bookstore.

Prove me wrong and write a long paragraph about the book.
>>
>>7746811
On its surface, the book is presented as a medical textbook in which Burton applies his vast and varied learning, in the scholastic manner, to the subject of melancholia (which includes what is now termed clinical depression). Though presented as a medical text, The Anatomy of Melancholy is as much a sui generis work of literature as it is a scientific or philosophical text, and Burton addresses far more than his stated subject. In fact, the Anatomy uses melancholy as the lens through which all human emotion and thought may be scrutinized, and virtually the entire contents of a 17th-century library are marshalled into service of this goal.[1] It is encyclopedic in its range and reference.

In his satirical preface to the reader, Burton's persona Democritus Junior explains, "I write of melancholy by being busy to avoid melancholy." This is characteristic of the author's style, which often supersedes the book's strengths as a medical text or historical document as its main source of appeal to admirers. Both satirical and serious in tone, the Anatomy is "vitalized by (Burton's) pervading humour",[2] and Burton's digressive and inclusive style, often verging on a stream of consciousness, consistently informs and animates the text.[citation needed] In addition to the author's techniques, the Anatomy's vast breadth – addressing topics such as digestion, goblins, the geography of America, and others[1] – make it a valuable contribution to multiple research disciplines.

>those obviously unopened penguins

Yeah, not every spine shows obvious wear. But every penguin text does, especially the longer ones. Those books are fuckin untouched. Stop shitposting and start reading.
>>
>>7746710
I've seen you study aerospacial engineering, which is nice, one of the non-shit STEM courses (based on the people I've met, at least, I'm shit at anything math or physics related to know any better).

Yeah, the translation is good. I've read parts of the Broom of the System and The Pale King in english, and the problem seems more with DFW than with the translation (haven't really read the essays book though, only a few mentioned on /lit/). Despite his memehood status, he's nowhere as good as Pynchon - or other PoMo authors like Deliolo and Auster, for that matter.

That being said, it's good, and I've been enjoying greatly (currently halfway through)

Gringos,

The brazilian Penguin (actually Penguin - Companhia das Letras) binding and paper quality are superior to the American and British counterparts. Please refer to the first picture, where my imported Penguins are shown; a clear difference may be noted if you look at the spines closely. To an extent, Companhia das Letras, Penguin's partner in Brazil, has a solid reputation as a master quality publisher.
>>
>>7746916
Yeah, your overrating Penguin-Companhia, their paper is just as shitty. Thought the binding is better, it's still not good enough to keep the spine pristine.
>>
>>7746928
Hah, no. Have you ever compared both with your own hands? Touch it, lick it, read it. Then come back and tell me which one is the superior edition. Also, consider that the unread volumes in that shelf are Ulysses, Contos da Cantuária and Ilusões Perdidas.

I always like looking at your shelf whenever you post, it's great. I have a few questions though; firstly with that Hart Crane book. I'm sure you're aware that Library of America advertise it with a blueish colour cover, rather than the typical black, were you aware of buying it black or blue, and could you tell me where you bought it from please? Second question, where did you find that edition of Blood Meridian, is it the 25th anniversary with an introduction by Harold Bloom? If it is could you post me the ISBN. The covers of McCarthy's books are truly shit and I want to get a decent looking one for when I read it. Thirdly, the Borges collected fictions. Where did you get it and what is the ISBN, edition and such? Thanks.
>>
>>7748259
>schwartz translation of Anna K

have you read it yet? Is it good?? I have her translation of oblomov...haven't read it yet.
>>
>>7746431
2 shelves missing, thought it was a nice picture though
>>
>>7748767
Thank you, anon! I'm glad you like it.

With my Hart Crane copy, I did notice that the pictures online were usually some tint of blue. It struck me as odd, but I didn't put much thought into it. I ordered it through a local record store, actually, who could get it for a few dollars less than the amazon listing.
It arrived, and was black, not blue. Thought, I have noticed that my Crane and Emerson books have a reflective finish to them, where my Ashbery and Carver have a sort of matte finish. Not sure why.

The copy of Blood Meridian was purchased from amazon, and it is the 25th anniversary with Bloom's introduction. The ISBN is 9780679641049.
I love this edition, honestly. I think you'll be happy with it, should you choose to pick it up.

The Borges fictions I found by chance at a local bookstore. It's the penguin classics deluxe edition, with the ISBN of 9780140286809.
I've only read a couple of stories from it, but it seems to be a pretty good collection. Good binding, too, considering its from penguin.

>>7748813
I've only read the first 4 chapters or so, but I did a decent amount of research before picking it up, reading the first couple chapters for the Schwartz, Pevear & Volokhonsky, Garnett, and Maude translations before making my decision.
I found that the Maude was the prettiest to read, Garnett the easiest, and the Pevear & Volokhonsky the worst (I thought it was a running joke on here that they're awful translations, but there was just something off about it, to me. I didn't like it at all).
The Schwartz was the happy medium between them all, I found, so I went with that.
>>
>>7748868
Thank you so much. All these editions can be pretty difficult to keep track with. Again, thanks.

>>
>>7748259
A very pretty collection. Any idea how much all that cost you?
>>
>>7748906
Thank you.

If I were to guess, I'd say I've spent roughly $1,500 on books, starting in December of 2014.
A surprising amount of that was spent in used bookstores, mostly on the Easton Press leatherbounds (they averaged out at around $30 each, with Paradise Lost running me the most at $80).
The most expensive ones were the Everyman's, and the Library of America books, at around $40 each new.

The worst was the Atlas Shrugged, on the far left. A first edition I found for $300 (though, I painstakingly haggled for 2 free books with it, so it wasn't too awful).
>>
>>7748956
Why so much??? I pickup most of my books at thriftshops for about 5c each on good days (2-3 bucks when they aren't on sale).
>>
>>7748521
No doubt I only got it because it was 50 cents at a used book sale.
>>
>>7749009
Well, as I live in a pretty small town, all of the thrift shops where they're charging those low prices don't usually have the greatest selection.
Between amazon new, and the college town used bookstores which I seldom get a chance to visit, it adds up.

That being said, I put away just $30 a week, every week, so $1,500 is pretty reasonable for a little over a year, especially considering almost that entire shelf was acquired in this past year with those funds.
>>
>>7749057
I wish I could bring myself to spend that kind of money on books in 1 year. Buying a pc was expensive enough
>>
>>7748461

>>
>>7749057

Made in the sprited wake of Finn, it leans heavily on obscure references and wordplay and experimental sentence structure, and does so brilliantly. It doesn't take itself too seriously despite being exceedingly demanding on the reader, which makes it enjoyably unpretentiousness, which is nice—think Seuss meets Proust. That being said, at times it borders on unreadable. Anyway, here's the beginning to give you a better idea:

"dont you think if a thief wants to come in, a locked door wont any difference;
he takes a walk,
he goes flying,
he crouches and he creeps
a small moth, making a mild twang against the summerscreen, becomes a slate folded wingclip against the metal mesh..." [sic]
