>The Freewrite is a $500 word processor. The device, which has Wi-Fi, a 5.5-inch e-ink screen and a mechanical keyboard, is designed to be a single-purpose writing tool. Files on the device are stored in plain text and can sync with Dropbox, Google Drive and Evernote.
>The device — intitally called the Hemingwrite — raised nearly $350,000 on Kickstarter at the end of 2014.
>Today, the Freewrite is available for pre-order in a 24-hour flash sale for $449. The price will go up to $550, and is expected to start shipping in March.

/lit/, explain yourselves.

>$500
>24-hour gimmick/pressure sale for $449

>not even rtf text
>>
You'd have to be really stupid to buy this.
>>
Can you browse /lit/ with this thing?
>>
>>7745803
I know they have to make profit, but it's hardly worth $500.

I could see people (hipster trash) buying this if it was around $200.
>>
>forking up shekels instead of learning how to discipline yourself

Sounds about right.
>>
orrrrr I could buy a mechanical keyboard for 90 dollars and use the rest of the money on 2 cheap black prostitutes and write about it.

Only wannabe self publishers buy this, deluding themselves into thinking they'd be gifted writers if it weren't for their easily distracted, yet beautiful and creative minds. But with this gadget they'll finally be able to churn out their bestselling Romantic Urban Fantasy Saga and reap the earthly rewards they deserve.
>>
>>7745803
$500 is absurd. Aren't there like $200 chromebooks?

There are also a million apps that disable your internet browser if you have that much of a self control problem.

Ridiculous.
>>
>>7745803
God damnit, so close yet so far. I want a fucking writing tool that's basically that but with an actual screen. Just boot it up and get Microsoft Word.

Is that so much to ask for?
>>
One benefit of being forced to use a library computer to complete one's opus is that the repressive internet filters preclude any worthwhile distractions (especially of an erotic nature). At first the notion of having to share my immediate space with members of the local community and older individuals who no-doubt come here to make friends or escape the misery of their homes repulsed me and made me very upset indeed at the fact my financial state meant that my own personal home laptop could not be repaired. But five books later and I can honestly say that the library will likely be the place where the final installment of my memoir will be completed and where my future novels might also be completed in full. It's rather like being in a prison I suppose, with a degree of enforced discipline serving to make up for any lack of discipline you yourself may lack.
>>
>>7745803
For 500 dollars you can buy a used typewriter and a cheap scanner
>>
Yes you'd have to be really naive to buy this. Just get OmmWriter or something and unplug your router, or just use an add on to block internet sites.
>>
i'd buy an alphasmart if ebay Can shipping wasn't horrible. pen and paper til then.
>>
just get like a IBM laptop from the 90s for $10 or something goddamn

Honestly I never get any writing or studying done when I'm at home, but if I'm in a café or library it feels like I have to feign some activity and purpose for being there or else people would notice.
It makes me do what I'm supposed to.

This is the first time I encounter him. I kinda like him; he sounds like an middle age, challenged individual who will tell the civil war history to you while looking at the floor when you ask him if he has seen your toothbrush. Also, genius comma-averse style.

You could just turn off your wifi. Or go outside and write with a pen and notebook. Why would anyone pay 500 bucks for this?
>>
..... shut up and take my money 0_o

Tfw I actually got to use one of these In grade 6-7 and I thought I was so fucking cool being the only kid in class not having to write. I remember my dad being so disappointed when I brought that thing home for homework one night.

>>
I would buy it for $100, just because I always lose my pens.
500 burgers is too much for this, specially because their 'less features is better!' nintendo-like mentality is cancer
>>
>>7747035
>'less features is better!'

I really don't get that. If you want to have a distraction-free pure text editor, why wouldn't you use vim or emacs? Those actually have capabilities that are useful to a writer, rather than notepad.ext without even a menu.

How is this even meant to help? If you don't have the self-control to use an ordinary computer without resorting to distractions, then this makes no difference.

You're better off getting rid of the actual distractions than buying what amounts to as another distraction device to distract you from your usual distractions.
>>
>>7745988
So a cheap netbook with a minimal linux distro with just a text editor on autostart?

That's very possible.

The entire draw for this device is the e-ink display and the mechanical keyboard, which implies a long battery life as well.

HOWEVER, I've drawn a mockup of something I think is infinitely superior, using things most of us already have.

Why an ereader doesn't support keyboards is beyond me.
