So, my copy just arrived from Amazon. Did I get memed or is this legit a good book?

Also, /gassposting/ general thread, I guess.
>>
>>7741883
Read it and tell us. You'll be the second person here to read it.
>>
>>7741883
memed. to death.
>>
>>7741883
It's the most beautiful, most complex, most disturbing novel to be published in my lifetime.
>>
>>7741890
Fuck off gassposter
>>
Gassposter memed you, son.
>>
>>7741890
jesus. he already bought the damn thing. lay off it!
>>
>>7741883
A few weeks ago people were clamoring for an ePub version so I tried my hand at it. I went through a few hundred pages of OCR correction when I gave up (the font and font size changes gave massive false positives)

What a complete piece of shit, meme, troll this book is.
>>
>>7741883
Considering it's the most important piece of fiction written in the last 50 years, no, you have not been memed.
>>7741897
That's my accomplice--Gassfriend.
>>7741901
No I didn't.
>>7741918
You're free to have your own opinion, regardless of how uninformed it is.
>>
>>7741907
It's on the cover you dingleberry.
>>
>>7741943
>Considering it's the most important piece of fiction written in the last 50 years
Maybe if Mason & Dixon wasn't published
>>
>>7741960
Mason & Dixon addresses many of the same things, but, in my opinion, it lacks the breadth and depth of The Tunnel's content, and doesn't match the quality of The Tunnel's prose.
>>
>>7741960
Not to mention Gravity's Rainbow.
>>
>>7742092
Not to mention Infinite Jest
>>
>>7742109
Not to mention The Tunnel.
>>
Gass' best is On Being Blue.

The Tunnel is really bad.
>>
>>7742128
Not to mention The Melancholy of Resistance
>>
>>7741883
throw it away and read Gene Wolfe instead.
>>
He's no Gaddis or Hawkes tbqhwyf

AAHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA

Why doesn't /lit/ ever discuss The Pedersen Kid?
>>
>>7743811
Because I haven't gotten to it yet.
>>
>>7743460
Looks like I'll have to purchase it. Two anons commenting on how good the book is.
>>
>>7743811
because it's one of the greatest short stories ever written and /lit/ likes status-affirming literature and condescending great art when it doesn't understand it

why in this deluge of gassposting has nobody mentioned Omensetter's Luck? Many similar questions can be asked.
>>
>>7743866

if you'd like his short story collection w/ The Pedersen Kid

I'm actually torn whether to read the Tunnel or Omensetter's Luck next.
>>
>>7741883
Mine arrived yesterday. I immediately flipped through, and after seeing the pictorials, typefaces, and text arrangement, I felt like I've been memed hard.

I knew Michael Silverblatt lurked here. Post your voice for us please.

is it the book by the litfag who work at the gas station for trucks ?

shit
>>
>>7743468
Not to mention books outside of English
>>
>>7744406
Read both.
>>7744418
According to Gass, the visuals are to demonstrate the personal nature of the text: "I wanted to make sure that the text which the narrator is engaged in creating is as personal, odd, and as far from the historical research and writing he had been doing as possible.". Gass is the kind of writer that doesn't do something without a reason, doesn't say something without a meaning.
>>
Fuckit, just ordered it off amazon. Don't care if I'm being Gass'd.
>>
>>7741883
read Gene Wolfe instead.
>>
>>7747342
Good choice
>>7747342
Just read both
>>
I was gonna read Omensetter's Luck first considering it's not a billion pages and all about a dude who loves Hitler or whatever, is that good or do I need to go straight to the masturbatory bullshit to get the good Gass tia
>>
>>7747453
Starting with Omensetter's is fine, and you might enjoy it more than The Tunnel--DFW did.
>>
>>7744418
>Mine arrived yesterday. I immediately flipped through, and after seeing the pictorials, typefaces, and text arrangement, I felt like I've been memed hard.
Same here, but more because it wasn't a full color edition.
>>
>>7741883
>>7741888
I might be the third, but I prefer Omensetter's Luck. HEEEEEEEEEEERETICS!!

I remember an argument here years ago between Wolfe fan and a Gass fan. Was that possibly Gassposter then? It doesn't matter. Also, I truly believe W, G, and Bolano make a uniquely /lit/ trinity to complement IJ, GR, and U.
>>
Just posted this in the other thread, but I guess one thread is enough and this seems to be the more active one.

I'm reading this just now (mainly because of Gassposter. Thanks Gassposter.), got about 50 pages left. I don't read a lot of postmodern stream-of-consciousness type stuff (why am I even here?), so I found the first 50 pages or so almost unbearably pretentious, but once it settles down it's great. Does seem to touch on just about every aspect of human life. I'm not sure I'll come away from it feeling like my life has been changed, but I know a lot of the themes and vignettes will keep coming back to me. Recommended if you're looking for a pretentious doorstopper that's actually quite fun to read.
>>
>>7747677
I'm happy you enjoyed it, but I don't think pretentious is an accurate description of Gass, as he doesn't pretend to be anything--he really is a genius, and he achieves everything he sets out to do. If anything, he is ambitious, experimental; he isn't afraid of taking risks because he knows what he is capable of.
>>
gass
>>
It's kinda sad that he has to be near-death before people start talking about him and buying his books.
>>

it's just one dude forcing a meme

yeah, just like that Gene Wolfe guy.

forced memes got me to read Gene Wolfe and he owns, forced memes will get me to read Gass too. forced memes are good when the people doing them have good taste
