How do you get to the point where you can write consistently good prose without editing neurotically?
When you stop posting on /lit/ for once
You don't. Writing is work, hard work.
Write with your ears.

No matter how much you practice, or how much you try, you will never be a great writer. You'll improve, sure, maybe even become mediocre. Published, even, but great? That's far beyond your reach. Some people are simply gifted, there needs not be any more explanation. At this point you have a choice, to mourn your talent, or lack thereof, and wallow in despair or you can embrace it, celebrate it, and try to go beyond what God made you.
