marx is the most important economic and political theorist of the past 200 years. name me one person who has had more impact on the development of the west in the past 200 years. without marx, there wouldn't have been the ussr (no cold war, no arms race, WWI and II would have gone very differently without USSR being the state it was), no china (no tech race, no over-industrialization), and our awareness of our place in late capitalism and current socio-economic movements would not carry nearly any of the huge theoretical weight they do.

pasta from my thread on biz

The Communist Manifesto

Marx, therefore, not because he is infallible, but because he is inescapable.

Most of his writing focuses on a critique of capitalism rather than a proposal of what to replace it with – which left it open to misinterpretation by madmen like Stalin in the 20th century. But his work still shapes our world in a positive way as well. When he argued for a progressive income tax in the Communist Manifesto, no country had one.

1. The Great Recession (Capitalism's Chaotic Nature)

2. More stuff to buy (Imaginary Appetites)

3. The IMF (The Globalization of Capitalism)

4. Walmart (Monopoly)

5. Low Wages, Big Profits (The Reserve Army of Industrial Labor)

Economic systems rise and fall just like empires. Since we began making decisions based on economic principles rather than historical ones. The results were catastrophic.

Understanding that human history is our greatest guide to the future. That's the kind of perspective we need to take, if we hope to prosper for centuries rather than for the next quarter.

Especially if our goal is to thrive over millennia, rather than simply to profit in our lifetimes.

Marx rejects markets. That's more or less flat-earth tier desu

>>if deflation, repeat

Marx can critique capitalism, and that can be a noble enterprise, but one should remember that markets are the way humans naturally trade shit, and are as much of a natural force as gravity.

This compilation desperately need some kind of guiding principle. It looks like list of books you have read and liked and not like a guide to a subject.

1) It definitely needs some pruning. Take it down to at the most 25 items.

2) Define the target audience, it has some very entry tier books like Farewell to Alms, Guns, Germs and Steel, Freakonomics or Thinking Fast and Slow at the same time as more advanced stuff like Recursive Macroeconomic Theory or The New Industrial State.

3) Keep on topic. Economic history is important but Farewell to Alms and Guns, Germs and Steel should not be the starting points. What about Braudel, Polanyi, Arrighi, McCloskey or Hobsbawm instead?

4) Keep it tight and avoid overlaps. There is so much to chose from and you take 2 books of Yunus?

5) Cover the classics. At the very least cover Marx, Smith and Keynes. I would include some of Sombart, Weber, Schumpeter, Sraffa and Kalecki as well.

This is...fine for pop-econ I guess? If you actually take this stuff seriously you're gonna have to read Keynes, Minsky, Hicks, Kalecki, etc. but I guess that's not really what you're going for with this.

Marx, Mill, Locke and Smith historically very important as well though with debatable applicability if you're really interested in current debates in the field.

Sowell is a thousand times more of a hack than anyone OP posted. read Friedman or Cowen if you want the intelligent version of that perspective
