High school fag here who just finished Aym Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" to get a feel for more coveted literature out there. Some of the shit in that book flew clean over my head so I'll be rereading tonight.
What else is there that's along the same line as, "This is an important achievement of literature therefore you must read!!"
Did I fall for the Ayn Rand meme surprise?

No idea who she was before someone demanded I read it for "literary purposes." I guess with it, I've opened the gateway for greater works?
>>7737947
Assuming I haven't been baited, Ayn Rand is only important in a do-the-exact-opposite-of-this kind of way because she was so wrong about everything. Just start taking your pick from this list at least to get you started

Not an argument

Get going.
>>7737947
what are you reading for?
>>7737958
Not baited, I've always enjoyed literature to some degree and my dad/teacher recommended it to me. Since I've only ever dabbled in baby-tier shit I said "what the hell" and started reading it a few days ago.
Thanks for the chart.

Plutarchs lives, modern library edition made me learn to love lit
>>7737974
Enjoyment, the widening of my own creative abilities, different perspectives and ideologies, etc.

Here's another chart. I remember "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Being on it though.

The divine comedy. Start at inferno and read all three parts too it. It really gets your brain thinking of things in a more specific context but at the same time allowing a lot of room for abstract concepts to flow freely. If you enjoy writting this is an excellent piece of literature to help get you over Some mental blocks and expand your vocabulary.

Based af. Don't let /lit/s cynycism ruin you. You're too good for this place
>>7737982
>etc
that tells me absolutely fuck all.
but you should read Raymond Carver regardless. unpretentious, simple, short, full of feels.
>>7737990
Much as Remains of the Day is one of my favorite books of all time, it doesnt feel right on that list.
>>7737992
Dunno if this is bait or not, but there is also a free online Yale course over Dante on youtube which is kinda neat

Like I said, I remember Androids on the original but someone must've changed it.
>>7737996
Essentially I'm reading for a more worldly view and to improve my writing abilities.
That and I want to crush normies someday.
>>7737992
Thanks, I'll definitely look into both the courses and the book
>>7737993
I'll try not to, I've casually hung around 4Chins for a few years now and the only board that's ever had an effect on me was /fit/.
>>7737990
I've heard of all of these and they sound interesting, thanks.

Can someone please explain the appeal to me of east of eden? i'm 600 pages in- 100 to go and I'm seriously thinking about dropping it.
More specifically can someone explain how the 'Chinaman' isn't the worst character ever created
>>7738072
I was too angry to write properly- sorry!
>>7737958
I've read a lot of these. But I have trouble with The Trial.
He's got such a dry prose, which I guess is common for existentialists?
>>7737947
>id I fall for the Ayn Rand meme surprise?
ya got meme'd kiddo
On different note, why are people so proud of not being a reader, or proud of the fact that they haven't read anything in years?
The people I hang with aren't even like that, randos feel inclined to approach me/speak up when I read. I'm not even dramatically whipping shit out to be an attention-seeking faggot. Why.
What are you even supposed to say to that?
>>7737958
>the bible

>hesse
>tao lin
>three (3) cormac mccarthy books

>naked lunch
Rand is right about everything. Commiefags be in eternal denial.

Isn't the bible a given if you want to be literary?
>>7738200
The bible is likely the singularly most important book ever written. To imply anyone looking to be more educated about literature shouldn't read it is just fucking retarded fedora tier thinking.
