I've never been on /lit/ before so I dunno if this is a meme but I love the passage where he's describing that jazz party with 'swains sojourning'... very masterfully written. Otherwise it's just forgettable like the vast majority of the American literature I've read.

Citizen Kane is only "good" because it revolutionized a lot of techniques that we take for granted in modern film.

Independently, many of these techniques were tried before. But never put together or utilized together as a whole. Nowadays, panning between flashback scenes is almost overdone; yet back then, it was never done before.
For that reason, Citizen Kane is like the Mona Lisa. When you see it in person at the Louvre today, it is almost underwhelming, and to a lay person, falls flat compared to your expectations. But when you compare it to everything else done before, it was revolutionary (first 3d portrait, etc.)
For that reason, the literary equivalent would be Caterbury Tales. Before, English literature was confined to old english alliterative verse (think Piers Plowman; Beowulf). But Chaucer was the first to combine and Master the syllable-counting of french verse with the stress counting of Old English to create Iambic Pentameter. And even though we look back at Canterbury tales now and see a bunch of fart jokes and agree that Shakespeare took the medium even further, it was really Chaucer who first developed it to the point of defining the art for the next 500 years.
