From what I've seen of slam poetry, it is more limited in genre. It is mostly confessional and focused around building up to a "twist" or an especially poignant concluding line. It's not very good because when you've heard one you've heard them all.
Most of the 10th graders I teach who are actually into literature, actually read and participate actively and productively in class discussions, write at least half-decent essays with some semblance of real analysis, etc. love slam poetry. In general I'm not about it, but it does give me a solid starting point, a good way to connect to and get them to appreciate the kind of poetry, and the poetic devices, that I want them to learn. I have to appreciate it for its usefulness in this regard.

Also, even the students who don't give a shit about my class are more likely to enjoy slam poetry, and it at least gives me a chance to teach them things they may need to know to pass the standardized test they are required to pass to graduate high school. This is an understandable but weak criticism. Is Haiku "not very good" because it is mostly nature poetry? Cummings' poetry isn't "very good" because it is mostly experimentation with form? I could easily say that if you've seen one Cummings poem you've seen them all. I agree that Slam is easily stereotyped but in my limited sampling of it I've seen plenty of poems that aren't confessional or "focused on a twist," but even those that are typical can't be dismissed simply for following a convention. If that was true for poetry then we ought to dismiss the entirety of per-modern poetry. Also, should poems in general not try to have poignant conclusions? This is a strange criteria that is simply not afforded to other forms.

If slam poetry is so bad, why is there always a tremendous amount of likes compared to dislikes on the YouTube videos? A whole comment section dedicated to praising their efforts, and if there isn't, as is the case with controversial or out-right wrong poetry readings, the comment section is disabled, as to block any real comments from the public that isn't idolisation. I know the response, it's because they're normies or something, but, and I've always agreed and said that slam poetry is awful, why are there not more people saying that slam poetry is awful? And if there is, they're not heard. Why are these slam poets not ridiculed, as they should be, outside of /lit/? I know it's difficult, as they all compliment each other and to get a negative opinion in on them would suffice to them making a collection of poems about that person, which in itself is another bad thing, but I wish that these people would stop what they are doing and actually focus and come back to the real world. These people have never been shouted at by their parents, they have never experienced death, and if they have it's nothing more than a collection of poems about depression and guilt about the deceased parent. These people are not real human beings, they are fake, and it doesn't even make me angry watching them now, it makes me depressed, because it's not just their intentions that depress me, it's that people are actually watching and enjoying and idolising these brave poets of our generation, and that in itself is depressing.
