Jesus Christ these comments are painful.
Anyway the 2014 list was somehow worse than the 2015 one. This one has a lot more shit on it like BEE and Fight Club and HP.

Yeah, that's exactly why those people use an anonymous imageboard to talk about books. Makes sense.

It's not the rape itself that's funny on its own, but it and the invasion's juxtaposition to the description of Candide and the Princess' idyllic, happy-go-lucky days. Basically Voltaire pinching a fat nasty on a court life that would rather not think of the horrors or war, when war was all Europe knew at that time.

Don't dismiss a book over one scene that you found distasteful when you know full well why it was included, faggot.

I am justifying Voltaire's use of rape in Candide to prove a point about aristocratic attitudes towards terrifying realities in 18th century Europe. In my post, I stated rape was included in the horrors of war, not that it was an inevitability that had to come to pass or a benign thing at all: we're quite good nowadays at waging clean wars (if you could truly ever call warfare "clean").

Various reasons I think.

- It's taken a while for the 2014 list to make its way around various places, so the 2015 list may catch up sometime next year.

- The 2015 list has fewer crowd-pleasers. e.g. Harry Potter is in the middle of the 2014 list, but in 2015 it's nowhere to be seen (though admittedly there are still a couple of Vonneguts making up the YA quotient of the list). With fewer crowd-pleasers, people are less likely to latch onto it.

- And the 2015 survey was a clusterfuck. Trolls and Christposters got the Bible to #1, and so there were then different versions of the final list that picked out various books that were regarded as being largely troll-voting.

What I find funny is that the last time I saw this list posted on /tv/ they had the complete opposite reaction: everyone was calling the list 'pleb', probably because in the realm of film there is a presumed link between 'obscurity' and patrician-ness that isn't really present in literature.

Kek at that false dichotomy. How does reading 100 of the most well-regarded novels from the last 4 centuries make you 'sound' well read and not 'actually' well read?
>>

>dude this is every board on 4chan, including /lit/. this list gets shit for being "high-school tier"
But it doesn't though. I have never seen that accusation leveled at it from anywhere but other boards.
99% of discussion on here surrounds famous prose and philosophical texts that most people with a mild interest in literature have at least heard of.
Compare to /mu/ or something where you routinely get lists like
>1: 上海老歌 1931-1949 (2008, Various Artists)
>2: Detwelvulate! (2005, Ivor Darreg)
>3: Maнipнa Myзикa (1990, Цyкop Бiлa Cмepть)
>4: ᐊᐅᓪᓚᔨᒡᒋᓚᑎᑦ ᓱᒃᑯᐊᑉᐱᐅᕙᓪᓚᐅᒐᓄᒃ (1981, ᑐᒪᓯ ᑯᕐᐃᓴ)
>5: Music for Tuning Forks (1987, Warren Burt)
>>
>>7732662
The closest /lit/ equivalent to discussing some unknown band would be talking about self-published books. The music version might carry some brownie points, but the /lit/ version definitely doesn't.
>>
>>7732650
I thought the same thing
>>7732662

I have made this comment before several times. Most boards are very contrarian. /lit/ on the other hand basically worships the Canon. I.e. very popular and we'll known works.
>>
>>7732706
In the current academic climate worshipping the canon is kind of contrarian.
>>
>>7732706
What do you mean with that?

>You're really going to criticize someone who's reading at all? Surely having someone who actually likes to read is good enough?
why the fuck does reddit revere READING in itself
if you read trash it's absolutely no better than watching TV
some TV shows are probably more stimulating than many books even

How would one go about tackling this list with the assumption that they have never read any of the books in the list?

Obviously just going down the list would not be ideal. Handing Infinite Jest to an assumed-to-be novice wouod be suicidal.

Someone should sort this list into "reading levels" that would make progression easier.
>>
>>7734361
There are a few other charts like that on the wiki, ones divided into "levels"

WHEN WILL THIS MEME DIE? FUCKING CONTRARIAN NORMIES CAN'T LIKE A BOOK WITHOUT RELATING TO THE MAIN CHARACTER

THIS OPINION LITERALLY TRIGGERS ME

having read the classics is expected, the only thing you get cool points for here is this obscure scandanavian christian mysticist, that russian poet read in the original, this french medieval epic poem, that contemporary underground Argentinian surrealist playwright. It's the same shit with its own flavor. Saying you've read Dante doesn't get a "good for you hombre", it gets "how's your freshman year curriculum treating you?"
Try lurking these threads and seeing what's said about this top 100 list.

No, the things you listed get you ignored.
Reading a book takes investment so most play it safe and only popular books get discussed and you get good taste points for canon authors.

and whenever there's a meta thread people that's the main thing people complain about

>the count of monte cristo is boring

Jesus christ I can kind of understand hating difficult lit if you're too pleb to get it, but Monte Cristo is easy to read and thrilling from start to finish.

This is what happens when consumers are inundated with game of thrones type movie action/violence. Anything less than constant killings and action is "like cardboard."

yes, the count of monte cristo was one of the most exciting novels i've ever read, high adventure, mystery, romance, revenge...

srs question, where is the gita
>>
>>7735195
Not true. /lit/ specifically seems to value a few authors and/or time periods over others.

Pynchon and Joyce are specifically mentioned pretty often around here compared to some other places, and really it seems that /lit/ doesn't like authors like Steinbeck or Mark Twain as much, early American literature stuff. /lit/ also seems to lean towards philosophy more than I usually see.

>Why would you make a list of 100 books based on a sample size of 138 people?
This guy evidently thinks this should have been a plebiscite.
So it would match every other public top 100.

This particular list is useless because it was created by anons submitting their three favorite books, and another anon creating a pivot table to give a count of each submitted book, the higher number given a higher place on the chart. This list IS subjective. It is a general gauge of what the people on here like, with a huge source of error being a large shitposter population. Also once you got past the first 25 in the 2015 list the variance between 25 and 100 was +/- 10.

That doesnt mean that some of the chart porn (especially the Chinese one) on the sticky isnt fantastic.
