Can another Brit please explain to me why our 20th century classic book covers are so unbearably shit?
>>7724620
Better than Wordsworth
If I can get the Penguin Classics version I always get that, its the perfect blend of not being gaudy/not being "le washed out 21st century minimalism"
Penguin Modern Classics is shit though
>>7724716
I like their weird Kafka covers
>>7724620
Vintage is pretty decent in covers.
>>7724728
Those are awful.
The art should at least be related to the novel, if ti isn't it shouldn't be there at all.
>mfw French minimalism
>>7724740
What the fuck is the cover to The Stranger?
Is it supposed to be the sun?
>>7724734
>fall: resembling an endless hole
>Stranger: the sun
>Plague: spreading virus
etc..
>>7724750
And Sisyphus is a hill.
Disregard, I'm retarded.
>>7724735
god thats fucking disgusting
>>7724756
it's ok, i didn't get the sisyphus cover for some time
>>7724756
And infinite recursion.
>>7724750
>>7724756
Holy fuck, I have these editions too and never even realised.
>>7724716
>Penguin Modern Classics is shit though
Nah.
>>7724728
I hate those Camus ones. Looks like someone knocked them up in paint about half hour from the deadline. Although the Murakami ones are good.
I like those Pinecone editions, although I'll admit that V is the weakest one.
>>7724762
Check your privilege.
Why are you faggots arguing over covers, this is some teenage girl shit. Just read the book.
>>7724785
Those are hideous photographs
>>7724957
>i own books for reasons beyond intellectual vanity
>>7724620
V looks like where's Waldo.
>>7724716
> Penguin Modern Classics
> shit
Nigga, they're better than the black Penguin Classics because they don't have a disgusting gloss finish on the cover that makes it look like a shitty textbook.
>>7725098
i just think with modern classics, often the covers looks like something that was cheap on getty/already in their cover database at the time
book with depressing overtones? lets put a photo of a person sitting in a corner looking sad, philosophy? lets get a photo of an open book/notepad with writing in it
>>7724620
Vintage UK Gravity's Rainbow has a cool cover, and its better donde than the Vintage US piece of crap
>that v. cover
disgusting
makes me wanna throw up
At least the British version of V. is the authorized version of the text with Pynchon's corrections.
>>7724620
Most of the times I would rather have Brit covers over burger covers. The ones you posted I wouldn't, but some other things are much better. The Vintage covers (except Stoner, as you posted) tend to be higher quality.
>>7725112
>I've taken this edition all over the world
>it's now yellow on the inside from exposure to the elements
>I still love it as much as ever
aussies are the only ones that get it right
>>7725226
disgusting
>>7725226
yer as an aussie i hate buying these
>>7725226
That looks fucking grim
>>7725226
looks like a book store in a dystopia
>>7725226
most australians cant read, so i guess this is to save money considering how low profit margins are
>>7725226
I'd have burned that store down and gone to jail happily.
>>7725302
sadly theres a section like that in pretty much every major aussie book store
>>7725226
this is pretty much what books look liked in eastern europe up until fall of communism, although they were mostly hardcover
>>7725226
>surely THIS will make people interested in reading the classics!
>>7725313
buy online
>>7725161
For some butthurt reason I'd consider this edition pretty cool if it only was for GR, the fact that his every other book has the same cover style is driving me nuts.
>>7725226
Garbage/Rubbish/Shite/Delete Yourself
in related discussion, why did they EVER change from this fucking perfect cover
>>7725327
Bullshit
>>7725356
What is it now?
>>7725356
fitzgerald said he didnt like it
>>7724620
I didn't know that DeLillo cover and others like it were real; I thought they were just an art concept. I find them fascinating.
>>7725693
but I do, and my word is bond
Nice work from 4th Estate. Why couldn't they use a peel off sticker? I'm taking a craft knife to this.
>>7725703
I don't like that underworld one. It makes me think that someone's going to punch me in the shoulder for looking at it.
>>7725703
white noise, the body artist and point omega are the only good ones. the names looks awful.
>>7725897
I hate the White Noise one
>>7724785
>le black and white means artful meme
>>7725886
is that one of the donwood covers? his artwork is usually a hell of a lot better. fuck the big ugly sticker thing though
i generally like vintage covers (though the stoner one does suck) and penguin modern classics are often really good too
>pic related
>>7725226
Dude these are great
>>7724728
I have one for Call of the Wild that's quite cute
>>7724785
everything about your post screams awful taste
>>7725226
>
>>7726206
yup, Penguin modern have some great covers
>>7724756
This is /lit/ in a nutshell
>HURR ANGRY MEMEING
>UR FAVORTE BOOK IS SHIT xDDD
>actually I was wrong nvm
>>7724728
>liking camus and murakami
>>7725226
I've picked up some of the orange editions solely because they cost less (half the price of the Modern Classics versions) when taking a punt on an author you haven't read before. In smaller shops often the only good fiction will be those orange editions; everything else is the usual Dan Brown/YA/etc.
>>7725226
>>7724620
Because the graphic design departments of modern publishers are filled with 'that' sort of person.
>>7724957
Notice how 90% of threads aren't about the books contents but about some mundane thing.
>>7725356
>liking le two naked women edition
Japanese and Taiwanese make great book covers, though they sometimes translate book titles into something hugely misleading. For example, "How to win friends and influence people" was translated to "The weak points of humanity" in Chinese for whatever fucking reason.
Picture related is translated to "Dissection of Story" in Chinese which explains the book cover.
>>7724620
>that White Noise cover
wew
>>7728492
both are quite tacky desu
>>7729332
Not him but you're an idiot
The chink one is perfectly fine
Wow, didn't realise this thread got any replies.
Here's a french one for comparison, sometimes they get it right. Not to mention the paper quality is amazing.
19th century ones tend to be nice though. Opting for a picture of the author doesn't tend to fail very often.
>>7730142
>author photograph on the cover - thanks no.
>>7724821
My nigga, how's his writing?
I just ordered pic related on Ebay, has anyone here read it?
>>7725703
thought that was one of those minimalist poster memes from /tv/ turned /lit/, until I realized I own that copy of point omega.
It's absolutely disgusting, but the best of those horrors.
>>7725340
I agree. That cover really suits Gravity's Rainbow. I doubt it suits the others since they aren't about the same thing.
