I'm not sure why, I guess that it's all some people ever read, which is unfortunate. But most everyone who has a serious interest in literature probably started out reading Harry Potter or The Little Prince as a kid.

Yeah, I've read his critique and it didn't impress me. I think he's right that the average person in their late teens or 20's doesn't go from reading John Green or Stephen King to more serious lit, but if you're a kid there's nothing wrong with liking King. I read Shawshank as a kid and I liked it. It's part of a process, you don't hand a child The Death of Ivan Ilyich and expect him to love it.
