Are there any /fit/ intellectuals?
besides me I can only think of one.
>>7718631
Not typically. You kind of have to be obsessed with what you're doing to be an intellectual, having it occupy all of your time and energy.
Beckett was said to walk 5 to 10 miles nearly every day though but I don't think that'd fit /fit/s stamdards/
itt:plebs that dont know the true /fit/ intellectual of the 20th century
>>7718656
I don't think that anyone is realistically so obsessed with anything they couldn't take an hour or so off a few days a week to lift weights.
A lot of the Greeks believed that purely having a great mind was incomplete unless a strong body complemented it.
There's some weird divide though, where people think that if you're fit you must be stupid, despite all the proof that generally, this isn't the case. It's a coping mechanism I guess.

To be fair, weight rooms do draw a lot of dumb guys. I enjoy making friends at the gym, but it's extremely rare to make a connection that offers something beyond a "gym buddy" who can chat about workouts, diets, chicks, your job, etc.
Personally a lot of my reading is ancient history, so I'm kind of obsessed with that ancient dual mind/body pursuit. Like you said, it's marginal effort for what I think (and others may certainly disagree) is a welcome and rewarding lifestyle shift.
It's possible that the norm plays in your favor, because all the negative assumptions which are drawn from your appearance and dispelled by your conversation are at least somewhat more interesting than "looking" smart and being so as well. But then again, I've met plenty of "hot" girls who didn't know how to respond when discovering that I wasn't a total brute, and I know of a few (and hate to imagine how much more there may have been) shy, smart girls who thought I was dumb/jockish/a player and so avoided me.
It's pretty easy to get labelled an asshole if you even somewhat look the type, and my friends have been forced onto a veritable campaign of explaining to presumptuous new acquaintances that I'm actually laid back and good-natured despite my appearance.

Nigga tried staging a coup in modern japan, fucked up then shiggy diggy'd to death in front of lots of kids. Sounds more like Japanese Jackass
Not that I can really think of, at least not the intensely occupied ones. Not to say that fitness can't occur with intellectual vitality because that's definitely not true. Just that reading, writing, studying, etc takes a ton of time, and focus tends to play in part with assimilation. Most just don't care that much since a lot of geniuses also tend to be quite disconnected from their bodily presence/sense.

you got a little verbose there at the end skipper maybe avoid that and the ladies will take you a bit more seriously. it is 2016 after all.
I decided to start working out this year and I'm surprised how easy it is, I've gained 3.5 kilos and gone from struggling with the bar to a 60kg bench, 70kg squat and 90kg deadlift. I also go for a 5k run once every one or two weeks. It's doing wonders for my self image.
>>7719968
I just started recently, I've good good lifts for a beginner (95kg Squat, 60kg Bench, 105kg Deadlift, 45kg OHP), but I'm skinnyfat so I'm gonna look poop for a while.
>>7719968
you should run 5k before you work out, get those endorphins flowing

Sure, weight rooms can attract idiots. But generally those people who are legit fucking stupid don't actually get anywhere with their lifting, and don't become fit. It takes at the very least a good understanding of nutrition and exercise physiology to get a good body, and it definitely needs a lot of dedication.
I think it's more that people generally aren't looking for serious intellectual debate in a gym, and you're not much more than a gym buddy to them.
I 100% agree though, people assume if you have a good body, that's all you've got going for you. It's just a bullshit stereotype, one that seems to be mainly perpetrated by people who don't have the dedication to keep at the actual lifting routines, or aren't smart enough to research how it all works. It's like people think life is an RPG system, where you get a limited number of points, so if you max strength, you'll have low int or any number of other things really.
Also, I don't have a link on me, but I remember reading a study that proved that those who engage in regular exercise, are on average, more intelligent than the general population, by a fair bit.
I don't see why your friends would have to explain to people that you're laid back and good natured though, lifting makes people think you're a dumb jock type, not an insane person.

>>7720129
Yeah, it's not possible that he went from struggling with 20kg up to doing 60kg for reps in that amount of time, that's nearly a fucking 100lb difference in 2 months or so, which is not going to happen for any lift, period.
He might have started with the bar and been easily able to do more though, I guess that's more possible. No program would recommend that though

Nah, bench press only ruins your shoulders if you're stupid and do it with bad form. Most people who bench with good form will never have any shoulder issues, which derive from impingement, which usually comes from flaring your arms out way too far while benching.
It also does carry over into other stuff quite well, I'd recommend you read SS for an explanation of this stuff, it's just the basics, but is in there. It creates more muscle in the arms and chest region, which will dramatically increase your ability to exert force using those muscles, meaning you hit harder, and push things better. Obviously on its own it's not great, but supplemented with a good routine, it's pretty vital for increasing upper body strength,
There's a reason why all of the best fighters in history have been quite muscular, and you can guarantee that they're doing some sort of horizontal press.
>>7720214
It comes from idiots not having a strong back and/or good posture.
And Rippetoe basically says bench is a good carry-over into OHP.
And he's sort of right. OHP is great and does everything you want bench to do. But there's still no point to ever bench press.
> There's a reason why all of the best fighters in history have been quite muscular, and you can guarantee that they're doing some sort of horizontal press.
Why do you retards keep saying that when it's clear they don't? Can't stand the thought of 10 years of bench press being a total waste?
Understand a bit of anatomy. Punches don't come from your chest but your ass. We never make horizontal pushing movements coming from the chest. Not even football players do this. It's all back and legs.
Squats will do more for your punching power than any "horizontal press"

>It comes from idiots not having a strong back and/or good posture.
Weak back can lead to it, but won't cause damage on its own. Bad posture just causes pain, and is usually a symptom rather than a cause.
>OHP is great and does everything you want bench to do. But there's still no point to ever bench press.
OHP is great, but puts a lot less emphasis on chest, it's nearly entirely a shoulders and triceps movement.
>Why do you retards keep saying that when it's clear they don't?
>Implying HW fighters didn't bench to develop a strong chest at some point
They're doing a specialised routine at this point, obviously, but the bench is the best exercise to develop chest strength bar none.
>Punches don't come from your chest but your ass.
True to some degree, but a person with a stronger upper body (including chest) and lower body, will always hit harder than a person with purely a strong lower body, assuming they both punch correctly.
>Not even football players do this. It's all back and legs.
Football players are a terrible example, it's obvious they bench regularly, seeing as one of the major tests they do is measuring how many reps of 225lbs they can get on the bench.
This in particular is covered in great detail in SS, he explains how the strength developed in the bench translates well to a football player. The program is basically designed for training young football players anyway, and it includes bench.
Also, why assume the dude ever wants to be a fighter anyway? You don't necessarily lift to hit harder, sometimes you just want to be stronger and look better. Hell, usually this is the case, people lifting for a sport is much rarer.
I can squat over 400lbs and I like Shakespeare
dfw was always in pretty good shape, probably resulting from his tennis training
