I had the same impression when i first read Debord's Spectacle but I think it takes concrete examples from one's own life in order to fully grasp how hard hitting some of his stuff is and be able empathize with it. Like, you don't get how fucked up everything is until you're neck deep in it.

He wrote two posts about a fictitious couple who are about to become engaged that was pretty interesting. The boyfriend wants to buy a ring that's slightly less than what the girlfriend deserves in the hopes that she'll accept him not for the ring but "who he really is", meanwhile the girlfriend wants a ring that's slightly more than what she deserves not because she cares about the ring but the fact that he cares that much about her. The end result for these two is presumably that neither of them will ever be happy.
It's quite a basic premise but the description of the psychology behind it was pretty nice, does anyone have a link to those articles?

Alone is pretty fascinating to me for some particular reasons. I grew up in an extremely hardcore Catholic family. A lot of the culture of average Americans/Westerners was a little strange to me, so Alone was my window into that world.
