This book is sitting in my gf's basement. Is it worth reading? How does Vonnegut rank amongst the greats?
>>
Lesser Vonnegut. Has a puzzle at the end. You will like it in inverse proportion to the number of other KV books you have read. But any Vonnegut is a quick read.

>How does Vonnegut rank amongst the greats?
Compared to Joyce or Pound, he's not very high.
>>
just did the first few chapters and some skimming throughout, don't enjoy his encyclopedic tendencies. can tell he's funny but holy shit a lot of it is dull
>>
Vonnegut is an important writer. Fedoras don't like him because he is accessible and popular.

Th is is a novel that had me understand prejudice like I have never before. Also "See the Nigger fly the Aeroplane"
>>

He doesn't rank amongst them at all. He's fine for a light read every now and then though.
>>
He uses simple language to explore compkex themes. This eludes the aspergian.

hit the nail on the head

I just finished this a couple days. Very good on its own merit, but not Vonnegut's best. Worth the read.

Vonnegut's fun! He's a light read with some heavier themes. Sure he's middlebrow but do you really want to win the approval of people who turn up their nose to that sort of thing?
>>
>>7706950
What a weary motif this becomes.
>>
>>7706922
None of the themes he explores are that complex. Hell, even the idea of themes itself isn't complex. The most complex literature transcends the idea of themes, plot, characters, dramatic structure, and all the fundamental things you're taught books are comprised of in order to create a distinct aesthetic experience.

Thanks for sharing your refreshing perspective

Compared to your face, I'm am very high.....dude...not everything has to be Proust. If you can't appreciate Vonnegut, than whatever...he is clearly a top 5 American author of the last 100 years.

kek. You are correct and these aspies don't even know it.

There's a lot of faggots on this board. I've read almost all of his work. That one is okay. Not the best not the worst

Let's hear your didactic monologue then....

This quote from Peter S. Prescott says it all.

>Breakfast of Champions provides further evidence that as a thinker and literary stylist, Kurt Vonnegut is fully the equal of Kahlil Gibran, Rod McKuen, even Richard Bach. These writers, gurus, and soothsayers apparently fill a need for some of us adolescents of all ages who clutch at any sentimental positivism: Gibran’s perfumed religiosity; McKuen’s mawkish romanticism; Bach’s can-do optimism dipped in mystical shellac; and Vonnegut’s smug pessimism with its coy implication that the reader is one of the author’s intimates, one of the happy few. The comfortable banalities advanced by these writers in place of ideas are totally incompatible, but that doesn’t bother the groupies. Anything will do for them as long as it tells us it’s okay not to think and as long as it’s presented in a lobotomized English that these writers feel is appropriate for their audience.

I get it. I really do. You're all a bunch of friendless, kissless, autists who were always the "quiet" one throughout school. And now that you've found a place where you feel superior, you attack others who like different things like a gazelle surrounded by hyenas. The sad part is, you're all still friendless virgins. You're an anonymous person trying to impress anonymous others. It doesn't help help yourself one bit.

I can safely say that I enjoy difficult and challenging literature, books the likes of Ulysses, Infinite Jest, and Gravity's Rainbow. They all keep a special place in my heart. But you know what? I also enjoy books that most people on /lit/ would hate. Game of Thrones, Ready Player One, Murakami, etc.

Liking those aforementioned books doesn't make me inferior to those who don't, in fact, in a way it makes me superior, because I can actually make arguments why or why not I enjoy those books because I've actually read them. Your argument for not liking them is "reddit likes them so fuck off to reddit".

Its childish and immature, but I guess that's what you have to expect when you're dealing with a group of mildly autistic neets.

I can safely say that you're a meme spewing pasta out of your brain-anus.

I guess now that warosu is down it's helpful when people post pastas so we can keep and treasure them.

My oh my. And I thought my home board, /mu/ was full of people with their heads up their asses: this place takes the fucking cake. I'm going to assume the role of an older person, probably mid-40s, at the parental point in their life: you should all be ashamed of yourselves for discouraging intellectual curiosity in the bright, inquiring minds of those younger than you -- those who possess the most curiosity about the world out of all the ages. I can't believe how pretentious and up your own asses you lot are. Telling the younger generation they could never read this or that, assuming they're too immature and naive to understand ENGLISH words written by ENGLISH authors, diverting them from what they want to do out of the assumption that their mind can't comprehend certain meaning. The absolute fucking temerity (that's To Kill a Mockingbird for you, which I understand quite well thank you very much). I thought this, of all places, would be the place for acceptance, tolerance, and an openness to curiosity and inquiry. I guessed wrong. I guess I'm only a stupid fucking kid who listens to meme music and who will never rise to the heights of your self-absorbed, vapid drollery. Fucking snobs. Fucking English majors. This might've even dissuaded me from going into English in college, my favorite subject. You're the reason why I hate fucking English now. I can write brilliant analytical essays, but after writing so many of them, I realized how pretentious, formulaic, and droll they really were: just like your respective attitudes. So you know what, I'm done with the conformity and the fucking listening to what pseudo-intellectuals have to say: I'm going to read Hocus Pocus on my free time (fuck the assigned books I have for English) and do whatever the hell I want. And you're not going to fucking stop me.
