Has anyone on /lit/ actually read this? What's it like? Why does /lit/ shit on this book if nobody has actually read it?

Shitting on Pleb core that is acknowledged by the mainstream as Pleb core is actually more Pleb than reading it.

I picked it up while my sister was on some errands and I was visiting her apartment

Put it down at the part where they paint a mural, smoke, and then complain about "le modern music" as they paint another mural
>>
>>7695445
Fuck you, I've seen shitacular excerpts and I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole.

You know what other books I read that /lit/ bashed and posted shitacular excerpts from?

'Oh how bad could they be,' I thought.
'I like trashy genre fiction and aren't nearly as high brow as /lit/ tries to be, I'll read Ready Player One and The Martian.'

Absolutely awful. I should have known better. When someone shits on your plate and tells you 'how can you know it's shit, you haven't even tried it yet' you are well within your rights to tell them to choke on their own shit and die.
>>
>>7695457
They paint five fucking murals throughout the book and there are like 2-3 page descriptions on every one

They paint one on the side of a hospital without permission and no one gets in trouble

I actually disliked John Green before I ever saw his name mentioned online. Not trying to say that in a 'hipstery' way, but it's strange to feel like people are judging you as someone who jumped on a /lit/ meme when you came here and found something you already agreed with.
Someone read me a lengthy excerpt from it (it was the scene at the first support-group meetup, IIRC) and I thought it was garbage.

I can't speak for >>7695606, but his youtube videos are cancer, and are the main factor in my dislike towards him. His pandering, childish way of 'teaching' concepts like communism and events like the Holocaust are not only terrible, but ironically hilarious.
>>
>>7695621
Yes, his history videos are shit, mostly because of bias, but sometimes he tells outright lies, like saying that Judaism was the first Polytheism, and that the Jews had nothing to do with killing Jesus
>>
>>7695445
I skimmed through it when I was writing this to get a feel for what his writing was like. It felt like he wanted to be a teenage girl to me.
>>
>>7695674
>Jews had nothing to do with killing Jesus
Did he claim that every Jew wasn't involved or that the Temple priests weren't involved. If the latter then that is completely incorrect.
>>

This never happened! The characters don't smoke because they have cancer. Augustus is an exception but his smoking is a metaphor bro.

Maybe a cumulative paragraph over my girlfriend's shoulder. Its just as shit as you would assume. Its like he intentionally wrote a 30k~ word novella then decided to make it a full novel by adding unnecessary clauses and adjectives. Its like wading in spare words.

Clearing up misconceptions about this great book. I read it last year and it changed my life. I don't mind if anyone dislikes it because I think everyone is entitled to their own opinions - I'm kind of a libertarian - but I want them to at least have an understanding of what they're disliking. TFIOS is the most criminally underrated book on this board. I think it's because the characters are teenagers, but if you guys would just give it a shot, you'd know that they're very mature and may as well be adults.

I've read it. it is the same as all pleb core commercial realism, there is no imaginative vision and it is driven by stock emotions, situations, and cliched prose with maybe an aphorism thrown in that speaks to a platitudinous human truth. the lack of quality is not what makes it hate worthy though, it is not Twilight tier or something, the hate worthiness is due to what we would consider corny "cringe" moments, characters, and dialogue. Personally I've always felt disgust at the concept of casual sex, its just something that is innate in me.

I assume, perhaps incorrectly, that most others feel the same way as I do about it. In our society sex is seen as a status symbol, the more of it you can acquire the better or more skilled a person you are.

I assume that most don't enjoy sex outside of proper relationships and only pursue and partake in it for status.

The only other motivation is pleasure, and I've never seen any value in hedonism.

I couldn't be with a woman who treats intercourse like a handshake, due to my personal views, and also due to the fact they're statistically more likely to be unfaithful among other things.

So our society does attribute value to sex, but not in the same way I do.

>>
>>7698888
the difference is that shit was frowned on and you didn't brag about it, just like there were always fags it's just in the last generation being a fag is celebrated as something to be "proud" of, today people who only want to fuck their wife are the ones who have to justify themselves to someone who just got done blowing a bunch of dicks in a nightclub bathroom, to me this is degeneracy, deal with it, faggot

“[Y]ou are not ashamed of your sin [in committing adultery] because so many men commit it. Man's wickedness is now such that men are more ashamed of chastity than of lechery. Murderers, thieves, perjurers, false witnesses, plunderers and fraudsters are detested and hated by people generally, but whoever will sleep with his servant girl in brazen lechery is liked and admired for it, and people make light of the damage to his soul. And if any man has the nerve to say that he is chaste and faithful to his wife and this gets known, he is ashamed to mix with other men, whose behaviour is not like his, for they will mock him and despise him and say he's not a real man; for man's wickedness is now of such proportions that no one is considered a man unless he is overcome by lechery, while one who overcomes lechery and stays chaste is considered unmanly.” - Augustine Of Hippo

Male promiscuity has actually been encouraged for a long time, whilst female promiscuity has always been looked down upon.

I feel promiscuity from either gender should be frowned on, but it has always been seen as a positive trait in men for the most part.

Purely biologically it's true. The man has no obligations in the breeding process besides having enough energy to have sex. There is no biological imperative for him to stay with the woman unless he loves her.

Women are physically much weaker, especially during pregnancy, and need the support of others, whether it be their baby's father, or their friends and family, to support her and the baby. The resource investment needed to reproduce for women is much greater. That is why nature biologically compels them to attach to strong men who will stay with them, and why men value women who are faithful (and aren't necessarily faithful back).

Really top quality bait. You have risen the bar for baiters
>>
My aunt gifted it to me, and it seemed important to her that I read it. It was okay, but a lot of stuff felt very contrived (in an irredeemable way).
>>
Why would I read it? I might sometimes shit on it and Green, but there's absolutely no need for me to read this. There's so much other stuff that I know for a fact is better or more enjoyable. I don't even think I know anyone who has read it, so identifying with friends isn't even a valid reason. So why? What could I get out of it?

Thoughts?

I enjoyed it for who I was at the time. But that was a while ago so objectively I would say it's run-of-the-mill YA fiction.
>>
>>7695699
I made more or less the same bait in a thread abut 3 months ago, also actually having read the (shit) book, and I did not craft it half as well as you've done here - "kind of a libertarian"!

A+ anon

No.I've read Finding Alaska, all the main characters were hipster and unique snow flakes that the author tried to make deep by giving them some sad past and angst.

>all this blind, seething hatred
Reminder you will never be as successful as John Green. Foam at the mouths all you want, but know you'll never accomplish even a percent of what he has.

There shouldn't be any debate over whether this post is genuine or bait. It doesn't matter. Stripped of context, this is a beautiful and awesome post and we need more posts just like it here.

The board was made a little better after this.

I hated John Green long before he became a meme here.

In fact, the hatred for him that everybody now has here has relieved a lot of psychic pressure from me

That really reads like he's buttblasted people level the same criticisms at him and he can't hide behind misogyny for *that*, so he may as well deflect it into a generalized, 'why do we treat female creators poorly' spiel for good little liberal points.

It isn't that he's successful, it's that he thinks he has something new or fundamentally interesting to say. He keep regurgitating half-cogent, maligned interpretations of both fact and fiction to suit his own ends - ends which, frankly, don't seem to do much good for him. Everything I see and hear from him sounds and reads as though he were on the verge of a breakdown, and the only thing that keeps him aloft are the hot, moist breaths of his followers billowing up to hold him there.

He makes things, and through that is able to hide that he's probably miserable. I don't make things, and I'm able to hide that I'm probably miserable. On top of that, I don't make a business out of telling people bogus interpretations of history and ideology.

He may not deserve pity, but he absolutely subsists off of it. It makes him feel big. It fuels that jagged hole in his brain left by the very nature of him not being a demagogue, and lets him pretend he's relevant.

I am fine if people want to enjoy his books. Lord knows I've enjoyed tons of trash, in my time. But he, as a person, leads an existence that I would find miserable, and his constant claims that he, himself is not miserable are hardly convincing.

I saw a free preview screening of the film with my girlfriend. It was full of crying women.

The pretentiousness of the central teens made me glad they were dying desu.

It's puzzling that teenagers seem to find the story relatable.

If John Green is bad YA, what is "good" YA?

The Hobbit?
>>
>>7703617
Teens aren't self-aware to realize that their problems are bullshit 99% of the time. They would identify with the main characters because to them being unpopular or having the girl you like fall for someone else is equivalent to getting cancer and dying.

>I think it's because the characters are teenagers, but if you guys would just give it a shot, you'd know that they're very mature and may as well be adults
Hazel and Gus are precocious teenagers yet certainly not adults. It show in their actions and John Green tried to portrayed it, notably during chapter eighteen where Gus is at a gas station and couldn't insert his G-tube, he called Hazel and Hazel wanted to call the ambulance yet Gus said not to call anybody, Hazel did call and all Gus was obssess with was wanting to remembered.
>He looked up at me. It was horrible. I could hardly look at him. The Augustus Waters of the crooked smiles and unsmoked cigarettes was gone, replaced by thid desperate humilated creature sitting there beneath me.
>"This is it. I can't even not smoke anymore."
>"Gus, I love you."
>"Where is my chance to be somebody's Peter Van Houten?" He hit the steering wheel weakly, the car honking as he cried. He leaned his head back, looking up. "I hate myself I hate myself I hate this I hate this I disgust myself I hate it I hate it I hate it just let me fucking die."

There's lots of good literature written by leftists.
Cucks not so much.
