I should add that I haven't read the book, but I listened to an interview with the author on The Cult of Nick (ep. 141, right after Anthony Peake), and he seemed to know what he was talking about. His interest in the subject was more focused on history than drama.

The overall idea was that while the Illuminati are certainly evil and commit atrocities, they are simply playing their role which they agreed to long ago in a grand cosmic exercise of good vs. evil, yin and yang, etc. etc.
