I refer to Boas' Mathematical Methods pretty often but as for the actual physics I'm p satisfied with Taylor.
>Next to the science I can't tell which Foucault it is
Foucault Reader. I've been studying a particular aspect of his thought so I picked that up to skim through to get a sense for the broad ideas.

How is the seven pillars of wisdom? I've considered reading it a few times but never looked for it. Lawrence of Arabia is my Dad's favorite movie so I've heard tons about it. I can't bring myself to throw out the dust covers on my everyman books though.
>>7691733
Oh god all the good things I thought about the first two pics are ruined by those gaudy barnes and noble hardbacks.

>>7691736
Undergrad? If not or if planning on grad stuff ever Arfken is easy to get ahold of cheap and much more helpful. I go to it often.

>All those Barnes and Noble leather-bound books

You were doing so well up until this point
>>
>>7691752

>How is the seven pillars of wisdom?

It's pretty good, and worth reading if you're interested in the middle east. Parts of it are a bit dry (it's not quite the pure 'adventure story' that 'Lawrence of Arabia is' - well, it is, but it is more than that), but some of the descriptions of the Arabs in the desert are quite lyrical.

>...those gaudy barnes and noble hardbacks.

It was a phase I went through. They don't look all that bad in person, and I still enjoy the ones with the Dore illustrations.
>>
>>7691770
That's fair. I have Monte Cristo and Holmes but after reading them they just felt so cheap and were so typo ridden that I decided they were all around not worth it.

>The common base of all the Semitic creeds, winners or losers, was the ever present idea of world-worthlessness. Their profound reaction from matter led them to preach bareness, renunciation, poverty; and the atmosphere of this invention stifled the minds of the desert pitilessly. A first knowledge of their sense of the purity of rarefaction was given me in early years, when we had ridden far out over the rolling plains of North Syria to a ruin of the Roman period which the Arabs believed was made by a prince of the border as a desert-palace for his queen. The clay of its building was said to have been kneaded for greater richness, not with water, but with the precious essential oils of flowers. My guides, sniffing the air like dogs, led me from crumbling room to room, saying, 'This is jessamine, this violet, this rose'.

>But at last Dahoum drew me: 'Come and smell the very sweetest scent of all', and we went into the main lodging, to the gaping window sockets of its eastern face, and there drank with open mouths of the effortless, empty, eddyless wind of the desert, throbbing past. That slow breath had been born somewhere beyond the distant Euphrates and had dragged its way across many days and nights of dead grass, to its first obstacle, the man-made walls of our broken palace. About them it seemed to fret and linger, murmuring in baby-speech. 'This,' they told me, 'is the best: it has no taste.' My Arabs were turning their backs on perfumes and luxuries to choose the things in which mankind had no share or part.

Like I said, it was a phase I went through a few years ago. Once I was out of that phase, people would still give me them as gifts, so the collection continued to grow on its own at that point. To be fair to the B&N books, their bindings are at least as good as modern day hard-covers, and they don't look as awful in the context of the room as a whole as they do in just a close up shot of the shelf. While I don't 'collect' them anymore, my biggest issue with them is in use of bad or old and out-dated translations (in the books where that complaint applies). I also think they actually have a pretty decent selection of sci-fi books that I wouldn't otherwise expect to see not in a pocket paperback format.
>>
>>7692480

The Oxford English Dictionary is great, anon. It's like an encyclopedia for words. If you ever get interested in etymology (and if you write a decent amount, you *should* get interested in etymology, so that you choose the right and most appropriate words), it's an invaluable and unsurpassed resource.

Taleb?

>The writer Umberto Eco belongs to that small class of scholars who are encyclopedic, insightful, and nondull. He is the owner of a large personal library (containing thirty thousand books), and separates visitors into two categories: those who react with “Wow! Signore professore dottore Eco, what a library you have! How many of these books have you read?” and the others — a very small minority — who get the point that a private library is not an ego-boosting appendage but a research tool. Read books are far less valuable than unread ones. The library should contain as much of what you do not know as your financial means, mortgage rates, and the currently tight real-estate market allows you to put there. You will accumulate more knowledge and more books as you grow older, and the growing number of unread books on the shelves will look at you menacingly. Indeed, the more you know, the larger the rows of unread books. Let us call this collection of unread books an antilibrary.

No It's just a mediocre, mid century translation. I liked the illustrations and book II is one of my favoite books of all time. I do wish they just used the dore illustrations though.

Similar reasons for picking up the chekhov book. It was 6 dollars at powell's book store in Portland and I had another of the same uncredited water j black 1929 publication with an unaccredited translator. It's not Garnet and it's really good.

I've got a really nice collection of some of Shakespeare but I don't have a photo and can't be bothered taking it but you're not alone.

I would have said that if I didn't try the 2016 version of it. It's one of the best tactile keyboards I've ever had. I prefer buckling springs but they aren't illuminated and they don't have a USB passthough both of which are very useful for my job since I edit video in a darkened space a lot of the day.

It's a really sunny day. Still working on sorting out my non-fiction and putting it separate from fiction.

Right now I'm collecting all the volumes in the Masterworks of Ukiyo-e series, and trying to find all the books that are just catalogs of "Japanese stuff" (Made in Japan, Things Japanese, Japanese Things, All Japan, Japanese Design, Wa, etc.).

World as will and representation.
Parerga and Paralilomena I / II in German from 1854.
Schopenhauer by Bryan Magee
Schopenhauer by Safransky
And many essays coming from P&P and the editorials sell as different books.

The furniture is just Ikea.

If you mean the knick-knacks, well, that's understandable.
>>
>>7705764
I just mean everything in general. The ikea shizz is fine, but the decorations and taste in books is pretty strange, and I don't mean just from an anti-japanophilic perspective. I don't know, I think overall it feels too feminine. Don't mind me, all a matter of taste.

Likely because it's the living room of a married couple; we have lots of stuff and different tastes, so things end up looking muddled.

What's strange about my taste in books, though? Here's the title-viewable pictures of the shelves. 1/6

These are missing the stuff I've got over the past two weeks though, like the ukiyo-e books, the Moomin series, some nice art/design books on steep discount and a bunch of books on food history.

At least you have Borges's Collected Fiction.

Solid collection if you've actually read even 10% of the thicker tomes, also what he said.

And, ffs, get a bookcase, even if it's old woodplanks atop brick. Seriously, you shouldn't even put 5 lbs of weight on top any paperback like that. Months of Jenga-tilting and those spines will warp for the worst.
>>
>>7705894
1. Make an improvised bookcase of flat boards and anything heavy that will add height between the boards.
2. Buy cheap boxes with dimensions that will show a row of 20 book spines at the top (heavier books will require more compact or more durable boxes).
3. Stack those boxes inside the makeshift bookcase.
4. Disassemble quickly anytime in case of travel.
5. Rinse and repeat.

I guess this is the most appropriate place to put this.

Where do I find a new hardcover of this book for under $70. What the fuck is this bullshit?

It doesn't just apply to this one either, why are new hardcovers of certain older books so fucking expensive?

I used to; we used to have a Japanese literature general thread in the way there's a sci-fi/fantasy general.

But the Jlit recommendation chart is great enough for general recs.
