Hallo

no, Joyce is second but it's not really close
I've only read Swann's Way so far but based on that, I'd say Joyce is his only rival. The two are so different though that they are tough to compare. Even themes that they may have in common are explored in wholly different ways. Both manage to always be uniquely effective so I don't think I could crown one the undisputed champ.
I will see if that changes after finishing Proust.
What defines greatness? Is it complexity that only a few will "understand" or is it the ability to reach millions while still writing with great quality?

I'd always assumed Proust was a meme author because of how long his novel was. However I finally read Swann's Way and was completely blown away. He is head and shoulders the finest writer of all the modernists

If you haven't read Sodom and Gomorrah (that's volume IV (4)), PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP about Proust's greatness.
You are all pseudos.

is it bad? swann's way alone is enough for me to rank him as goat
