Is he right?
>>
>>7682937
He's an idiot for thinking there is such thing as a "better" or a "worse" writer which would imply some kind of aesthetic realism he doesn't even agree with.
>>
no. Pushkin and Chekhov are better, and he hasn't read Lermontov

Did Norm read translations?

If he did his opinion is irrelevant
>>
a lot of tolstoy's short stories are irrelevant and parts of w&p sag. but anna karenina is perfect. much better than anything any russian wrote. dostoy is still p good.

He sounds like a posturing fool

Okay, since I can't read bearrune, which translation of Anna Karenina would you read?
>>
>>7683080
i think he's just carried away by his love of Tolstoy and really wants his fans to read him so he's romanticizing him.
>>
oh wow this tweet smashed my aesthetics
>>
>>7683092
i red P&V. I read anna keratin before i started lurking /lit/ and then i come here and everyone rips on P&V translations. I thought they were great but i don't have anything to compare them to...
>>
>>7683100
autocorrect just fucked this post up but you know what i mean
>>
>>7683092
You know, all the people that will come with their own translator probably never read another one, unless you find “the” guy who does nothing but go through all the translations ever published.
>>
>>7683092
I read p&v but my next reading will be the Bartlett translation. Based on the comparisons I've read, I would go with Bartlett
>>
>>7683092
Definitely not P&V.

Their system of translating is completely fucked, one translates from Russian into basic English and the other, who doesn't speak Russian, plays around with the words until they sound like he likes them to.
The result is a translation that's neither literal nor able to transport the meaning of the original.
>>
>>7683110
hate hearing this after reading multiple P&V translations of tolstoy and dostoevsky works...i feel like i wasted countless hours of my time and didn't even get the real story.
>>
>>7683110
they've won multiple translation awards. all you have is baseless claims.

Why do people always have to compare people to decide if they are good or not?

Are you stupid?

What would be the point of comparing things that are nothing alike?

Did you ever hear the phrase "comparing apples and oranges"?

Norm is the GOAT comedian. He has so many things going on with each joke. I like how he pretends to be a bumbling oaf and plays himself down constantly, all for comedy, even though he has fucked so many hot celeb bitches and is very smart. Any time someone mentions one of his former girlfriends or something he is good at he never says anything and just changes the subject. The movie 'Rounders' was based on Norm, Milos Forman wanted to give him a leading role in "The People Vs Larry Flynt" and he's had so many opportunities like that he has turned down to keep him image of being a unsexy idiot. Truly love that man.

Tolstoy is the greatest author to ever put words on a page so to compare him to Dosto is like comparing Beethoven to Sedlatzek

Tolstoy>>>>>>>>Gogol>Chekhov>Dosto>Turgenev (haven't read enough Pushkin to have an accurate opinion)

...and Fathers and Sons is one of the great works of the 19th century. Damn those Russians knew how to write.
>>
>>7683248
Please don't call him "Dosto".

Norm was forced to do so because of twitters character limit.

regarding the p&v meme, even pevear and volokhonsky themselves attribute credit to Garnett, and say that she's a perfectly good translator, and that their only complaint is that she didn't translate the humor.

Not him, but the argument that you need to become fluent in an entirely new language and alphabet to the point that you can catch and understand all of the literary devices the author used is bullshit and a dumb may may.

I'm bilingual so it's arguably easier for me to learn new languages, but learning a language and becoming fluent enough in it to understand literature in it is more time consuming than beneficial. People study languages for years before they reach that point.
>>
>>7687297
This doesn't contest any real reason why people spout that meme though.
