Pynchon, Bolano, Dostoevsky, John Green, McCarthy. I was totally clueless about these authors' meme status when buying them. No wonder people gave me weird books at the book store.

Pynchon is pretty gud tho

Started reading in the past year and while some /lit/ recommendations are great, some have been some real clunkers

You're the one meming. Its literally considered THE quintessential science fiction novel in pretty much all literary circles outside this contrarian shit hole.

I'm 19 years old.

I am handsome, smart, athletic and virile.

I have a novel that is in it's final editing stage, and a creative writing professor at my college has read the first draft and thinks it's saleable.

I have a girlfriend who is confident, articulate, playful and spontaneous.

I have a small group of interesting friends from different social and academic backgrounds, and I also have many other acquaintances who see me as a reliable source of humour and good company.

Both my parents are alive and in good health.

I have no regrets.

I have already experienced three existential crises, the latter of which was described as having the depth and profundity of a man twice my age.

I am a passionate lover, a sharp thinker, and a trader of witty repartee.

I am not self-pitying, meek or needlessly humble.

I will live a good life at your expense.
>>

Yes

I don't know about the rest of their stuff but Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was legit. Though another album that gets mentioned a lot as being similar, Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys, is complete shite.

I disagree. PS sounds pretty timeless
>>
Brother Karamazov. You people actually read that garbage?

>OMG it made me a christian
>>
>>7672490
I know it was part of the inspiration for Sgt Pepper but it's just boring lyrically, thematically, and sound-wise compared to Sgt Pepper. None of the songs in Pet Sounds are anywhere near as interesting as A Day in The Life, for instance.
>>
>>7672515
I see your point. But I feel that PS has a much more "finished" feel. Its so layered and detailed compared to sgt.

It's worse than John Green. At least Green tries to present some interesting ideas/concepts and tries and fails to write with style.
>>

>enders game
This, F a m. The only part I enjoyed was the dream/video game Ender had to play, where he killed a giant and people made an apartment complex out of the body. Reminded me of the Norse story where Odin and his brothers made Midgard (or was is Isgard?) out of the ice giant's body.

>couldn't even comprehend the elementary themes and motifs of a classic
Yeah, the whole exposition dump of Orwell's political views disguised as "Goldstein's book" was soooo subtle.
His characters are shit, their motives are shit, and his whole understanding of human psychology is an absurd hyperbole.
>>
>>7672321
>john Coltrane, miles Davis the list goes on
>the fact that so many books still name the Beatles...
>>
>>7672170
That's a pretty damn good book. Maybe you just have a shit sense of humour.
>>
>>7672303
Fahrenheit 451 I think is a good book, but honestly it's overrated as fuck. Also, it seems like it's more about how society can get worse through trying to make things "safer" than it is about censorship.

Is Roadside Picnic a meme?
>>
>>7672158
Wind Up Bird Chronicle

it was a meme the first year of this board, before IJ, even. So I figured I'd read it. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was a total waste of time, but it kinda sucked.

speaking of lit starteer kits, and meme books. ive just finished american psycho. whats a good chaser? i recently purchased catcher in the rye, and i was thinking of reading that next. any suggestions? i just didnt want to start my ownthread and clog the board. thanks.

What does it matter if you get memed to read something stupid every now and then, when books like1984 take only few hours to read?
even on 50+ books a year pace one must read not-that-perfect books quite often.

I read a book because I want to read it, where I heard of it doesn't matter to me. Even if I heard of it off of /lit/ that doesn't make it a "meme." There's life out there other than the Internet, you know, right?

You shut the fuck up about Bolano
>>
>>7672635
I vastly preferred the Shadow Quartet to the Ender Quintet, myself. I saw no real reason to like Ender, while Bean and Peter were more or less consistently cool.
>>
>>7675184
>valid
>justify your opinion
You don't know what this means

McCarthy simply isn't my taste. I find his biblical repetition to be annoying, his lack of comma to be pointless, and sometimes I think he writes things that sound nice but are ultimately meaningless or deliberately ambiguous, which I also find stupid. That's all
>>
>>7675219
I'm no more or less intelligent than any other person on here, all I'm saying is that this is the Internet and my whole life doesn't revolve around who says what on /lit/.
