The Tokypop translation is pretty shite but overall the book is a really effective, bleak tale of isolation, loneliness, and bitter self-hatred.

The manga is the best option, they butcher things in the anime and the light novel prose is horrible for anyone with a little taste.

Hi, sorry for the late response.

You fail to understand.

This thread is literally against the global board rules.

http://www.4chan.org/rules
/jp/ - Otaku Culture
2. This is the appropriate board for the discussion of Japanese visual novels and light novels. Western visual novels should be posted to /vg/, and translated visual novels are fine on either board.

This thread is a bannable offense. It has no discernible value. Please leave.

I actually have a pirated copy of this on my Kindle because I had been fascinated as of late with hikikomori and loser shut-ins in general, but haven't gotten around to reading it. Then I find out it's a light novel. Not expecting much.

Really Japan needs to stop pandering to otaku and weeaboos with babby lit with anime covers. Just let them fucking die off in their fetid, cluttered apartments.
>>
>>7682198
>I know nothing about Japan culture
Stop talking about things you don't know. You read a shitty translation made by some third rate publisher and you expect it to be good? Of course LN are garbage but there are a few exceptions. This one might not be a masterpiece of literature but I?m pretty sure it's not on par with your average LN either.
The author is a hikikomori himself and even after the success of his book he wasn't able to change his lifestyle.
>referring to ABe as "anime covers"
For your information the novel has only one illustration other than the cover.

If anything light novels are "normal" books. For young Japanese people at least. And yeah, you can enjoy finer things and still consume weeaboo trash as a guilty pleasure, but for Christ's sake, don't advertise the fact. >You really think I will give a fuck if we meet and you think I'm a disgusting weeb when I tell you I read Welcome to the NHK last night?
No, and technically I wouldn't either. I might ask you about it. If I came over to your place, though, and you had manga and light novels displayed on your shelf, I would start to judge.

People should be judged for the entertainment they predominantly like.

And also
>There's no fucking manga/anime style, that's a thing the west has invented.
Okay, so it's a fucking cartoon cover then. Let's settle at that. What if Stephen King's next book had a Marvel comic-style character on the cover? It would mean the publishers are trying hard to reel in neckbeard comic nerds.
>inb4 there are graphic novelizations of Dark Tower and Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas
Yes, those are made to pander to manchildren who'd rather look at pictures than read a whole page of text.
>>
>>7682307
As I said only ignorants limit themselves. I have about 1000 manga volumes, I read literature, genre and non, I watch movies, I listen to every kind of music etc.

>Okay, so it's a fucking cartoon cover then. Let's settle at that. What if Stephen King's next book had a Marvel comic-style character on the cover? It would mean the publishers are trying hard to reel in neckbeard comic nerds.
I call them illustrations. Would you shit on Beardsley and Dore too? Yoshitoshi ABe is a great artist.

You sound like a moron. For that I would condemn you, not because you have Harry fucking Potter on your shelves.
>>
>>7682316
>As I said only ignorants limit themselves.
I didn't say I haven't read manga. I just don't advertise it. It's media made for a trash demographic, even though there is some good stuff within it.

>I call them illustrations.
Still media made for a trash demographic.

>Harry fucking Potter
Trash fanbase.

Look, you can like stuff made for manchildren, you can admit that some of it elevates itself above pandering, but don't pretend that you're a bettered person because you "don't judge" and aren't ashamed to own 1000 chinese picture books.

You know those people that decided, at some point during or after college, to stop being self-conscious about their nerdy hobbies and just own it, and flaunt them freely? That's called autism.
