Holy shit, this dude is a shitty writer.
>>7665168
? The quality of his wtriting is beside the point.
>>7665172
I can't get to the point because it is an unorganized mess.
>>7665207
Oh, I thought you were talking more about his phrasing etc. It's maybe a tough thing to get organized, given the endless variations on the overall theme.
>>7665168
Agreed
It was a shitty pop-psychology book
I had high expectations
>>7665207
So, this is the readable version of Finnegans Wake?
>>7665168
Read The Epic Hero by Dean Miller instead, it's more modern and organized. I would recommend reading it afterwards, but if you think Campbell's shit you might as well skip ahead. Other authors you can look up, closer to Campbell's time than Miller, are C. M. Bowra and Jan DeVries.

have you ever read a scientific journal in your life?
>>7665898
Yes, I've read many
>Not reading The Golden Bough instead
Plens

The writers journey by vogler does a good job of organizing it. Darren arronofsky recommends it in his top 5 books for filmmakers or whomever. Jon Favreau also has recommended it on two different podcasts..

something makes me doubt that

Is Joseph Campbell actually revered here? I read that he just cherry-picked story-telling elements from different cultures, threw them together and claimed they were found in the myths of all cultures. Could be wrong about that, though -- haven't done much research.
>>7666154
Yes and no, its some psychology stuff too. Good if you're into writing film screenplays and fantasy/sci-fi lit, but for example most classical literature doesn't follow those elements.

Looking for structuralism in myths works. Trust me, I know a fair share about this.
Levi-Strauss did it pretty well.
Not a reason to draw hasty conclusions though, but great archetypes or some elements are pretty recurrent in most narration corpus.
I feel you OP. The book is horrible to read IMO. But he is marvelous to listen to and luckily there is a lot of audio and video of him out there

I'm Joseph Campbell and what on Earth is going on here. If you don't fancy my book then you can take your rear end somewhere else.

Shouldn't you be six feet under or something?
