Recent purchases thread.

Bought some Japanese books that I couldn't find online.

The 3 on the top left are The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle and below them are 3 Mishima novels (The Sailor Who Fell; Mishima's essay collection; Sound of Waves).
There's also Junichiro Tanizaki's short stories and Banana Yoshimoto's Kitchen. Those are the ones that have a translation.
If anyone cares about the other ones, ask.

Not Japanese. Haven't read anything by Nichiren yet.
Only read 1 or 2 books by other famous writers so far. Anything specific you're interested in?

Please what is about all the others, especially with the man and the blue-red-black one. from someone like yama(isn´t thisthe kanji for mountain?)
>>
>>7666291
how long did it take you to be capable to read these in their original language
>>
>>7666551
I've been studying by myself for about 2 years now but I think I could handle most of these a bit more than a year in without looking up too many words.

Mishima would probably be the hardest one from these since he uses a lot of unique vocabulary.

>>
>>7666871
A lot of time reading and constant increase in material difficulty.

After the initial month of studying grammar and getting basic vocabulary I spent at least 4 hours a day reading.

It's a big bonus if you're into otaku culture since most manga and visual novels are quite easy and a great source for getting new vocabulary.
>>
>thinking Sound of Waves isn't a hack job Mishima tooted out for $$$$

Christ, you idiots don't even do fucking research on the books you're buying. You just want to be seen owning them bcuz muh japaneeze literature
>>
>>7667600

It's quite short and charming.
>>
>>7667655
It was written cynically to be blandly palatable mush, to give idiot readers exactly what they expected out of a book.

Congrats on being a literal pleb.

I know you're mostly memeing but Sound of the waves is actually one of his most critically acclaimed novel.

Yes he did write a bunch of novels purely for money. 夏子の冒険 and pic related are good examples of that I think. They're so different from his other works and appeal to a large demographic.

Anyway I haven't read it yet so I can't comment myself but what didn't you like about it?
>>
>>7667669

Who cares, reading can be fun without needing to be some high art that examines what it means to have free will or whatever.
>>
>>7667684
It's his most critically acclaimed novel (excluding the tetralogy) because it's his his most widely read. Because the language used is at a much lower level than his real literary works. Duh. Also of the books he wrote purely for money, Sound of Waves has since been widely translated/circulated internationally.

It's not hard to see why dumb people enjoy it. The plot is the most average thing imaginable. Boy and girl fall in love for the first time. Familial and social barriers prevent them from being together. Boy proves his worth to girl's father. The end. That's it.

Don't waste your time on this one. Mishima's a fascinating writer, from his novels to plays to short stories, but SoW is of a completely lesser order.
