The best advice is as follows:
1) Read a book on meter (Rhymes Reason, Ode Less Travelled)
2) Read an anthology (Bloom's, Norton's)
3) Read the works of those you like

where are you from?
reason being, it can easier to identify with someone who is familiar with your landscape.
there's a book store a few towns away that has a Georgia poets section and that shit glittered my tip.
