I open it to the first page and if i'm bored by the first page I put that shit back down. because, hey everyone knows your first page needs to be the hook. An exposition of your best writing ability. if it's not then you're starting your audience off feeling like shit just drudging through your book like a bored teenager reading their highschool reading selection then just going fuck it and watching the movie instead.
