The only good slam poetry is about the black or queer experience. I think it's a really neat way to convey perspectives that I know nothing about. This is shit.

slam poetry is a strangely self-serious form of rap music, minus the music, and minus most of the rhythm. This I will defend against any insistence to the contrary. The way slam poets use stress has far more in common with rap than with the metrical play of poetry, and thematically it has a lot in common, too—defiantly sharing the speaker's own marginalized perspective through retelling lived experiences/etc.
Of course, since it's all over-educated mediocrities with not much talent for entertaining, instead of making the experience fun for the listener they give it the name of "poetry" and throw a false importance over what would otherwise just be self-pity and a microphone.

I found that slam poetry goes down more easily once you separate it from poetry altogether. It's a "corruption" of poetry to the extent it's something else entirely, and ought to be treated as such.
Would much rather watch someone perform a good slam poem than the arid Lacanian/postmodern "poem" by some fuck who ironically wears beanies and keeps a collection of craft beer bottles in his gentrified studio.
