How come there aren't any books / short stories about SCP? Seems like a gold mine for writers.

173 is widely regarded as shit, but it gets mentioned/respected because it's the very first SCP that was written. It was a literal creepypasta from /x/ that gave birth to the idea of a fictional organisation that protects the general public from spooks. There are actually decently written ones (http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-835 and what it does with the exploration log comes to mind, though beware the page image is disgusting), mostly the newest series, 2000-onwards. Though obviously, if you compare them to actual accomplished writers they're gonna fall short.

That's why I think calling it a "gold mine" is ridiculous. Even if some of them are decent, there's nothing special about any of them. You'd be far better off ripping off the Greeks or the bible like everyone else.

I'm not OP, I agree about them not being a proverbial gold mine.
Although the ones that can be called decent are the ones that are in fact special, ie the ones that take advantage of the medium, which you'd know if you'd actually dug up the better ones. Or if you have actually read them, I guess your standards are simply higher than mine.
