he writes in a first person perspective and aims for shock value, often praising such acts
he's also a notable enthusiast and worked with a handful of musicians
Buyer's Market is his self-proclaimed masterpiece
The least I can say is that he's got a very clear understanding of the way language affects people, and how to construct his prose to illicit a particular response. He ought to write advertisements, honestly.

Garbage. I hate all American "alternative" or "indie" stuff (I know Whitehouse aren't "indie" per se, but I mean alternative in the broader sense).
At least in Literature, avant-garde or experimental artists are aware of the traditions they are trying to transcend. For example, Joyce is a fairly experimental writer, but his education in classical and traditional forms is quite obvious.
Conversely, in most underground music since Punk, it's almost obligatory to be experimental or subversive. Every other band to come out of New York in the late '70s / early '80s had the same mix of noise and subversiveness, but if everyone is avant-garde, then no-one is really avant-garde.
Do you think Sotos has studied Homer or Vergil? Do you think he listens to Bach? Of course he doesn't. His art is subversive for the sake of being subversive. People like Steve Albini like it because it doesn't require any knowledge about really experimental or avant-garde music.
Underneath the subversive facade, there is nothing new or innovatory about Sotos' art. Whether or not he makes his art to shock is irrelevant.
