Pretty richfag here. I use the library, alibris often sells for 1-99 cents + 3.50 shipping, and I pirate.
If you are buying full price from amazon or big box book stores (unless you are buying modern library or everyman or folio editions) you are doing it wrng.

Last year I bought a box of 200 books for 10 bucks. I was the only person that bid on that sale, probably because all the books were in English or French (I even found two book in chinese).
I go to the library or dumbster dive. The undergrad life is pretty sweet.

Buy second hand. There's a second hand bookshop with a good selection of literature selling for £3 a book. Oxfam used to get some good books in as well, but not so much these days
I had alot of fiction books that I liked, but as my taste changed I am trading them for old books in used-books-stores, books that I intend to keep for life, for example philosophy/history/non fictional books in general, for the sake of having them around to consult them later, or favorite literature classics (I could download them, but since I have books I don't use to trade for them, and selling isn't worth it, then whatever.

Goodwill is a godsend. Literally nothing priced over $1. The only problem is whichever high school student they get to stock the shelves doesn't bother to put anything in any kind of order, but that almost adds to the fun. They always have classics, bestsellers, and more obscure stuff in spades. I can spend the longest time browsing, then come back a week later and it's like there's an entirely new selection. I'd imagine other thrift stores are similar.

Lived in Wales for about 6 months. Had to have my girlfriend bring an extra suitcase just to carry books. Even then two suitcases of my own weren't enough to carry it all and had to carry over 15 books by hand. Bought so much stuff while there

I lived in Paris actually, but visiting England was one of my favorite parts. I had to mail books back because of how many I bought. Hanging out at a certain famous Parisian bookstore did me in, because the owner was giving me extra money on trade in for my books because I treated them well and were good titles. It was almost a 1 to 1 swap for a used book, I would just have to chip in a euro or two.
