it's well established that garnett was one of the best translators of Chekhov.
in the end though, it's always down to your personal preference. do you like literal translations, or a bit of liberties to be taken to preserve flow, close to period? or modern? grab a few excerpts, or hell, even a few stories, he wrote some very short ones, two or three pages, short enough to easily compare. I suggest and personally like garnett very much, but she's my favorite russian translator in the first place. good luck.
