"So do you consider yourself a reader?"
"Oh yes, I love to read!"
"What's your favorite book?"
"Oh I don't really know. I only read about 3 books a year. I really enjoyed The Hunger Games when I read it though."

What's the most appropriate response to this?
Im seriously afraid for this generation /lit/.

Answer to what?

How do you respond

non-autistic response

"that's neat, i thought that book was alright too"
>>
>>7641945

'then you're not really reading'.
>>

How do I respond to the question or the answer?

and I just nodded and said

So they are a reader, if that's what they concider to be their hobby. Is hunger games not a book series

? Or are you implying they're not a "true/real reader" because of the low book-to-year ratio?
>>
3 books a year is fine. You know, some people read fast, some people read really slow.

Basically who really gives a shit other than you OP
>>
>>7641945
"Oh that's cool, I haven't read that though. I'm not much of a reader myself haha. I liked Ulysses, that's about it. "

Get off the topic before you say something you will later regret.

You realise different people have different tastes and interests, and can be interested in things at different levels, and that's okay because otherwise everyone would be fucking boring.

Then, you try to not be quite so autistic in the future.

Reader: someone who reads.
By extension book reader: someone who reads books.
That's it, really.
>>
>>7642636
Except that he is describing the general attitude of the vast majority of today's youth, not the vagaries of any individual's taste. That is literally how the average person relates to literature and book reading; whether they are interested in hunger games vs. the divergent trilogy or w/e, doesn't really make a difference.

Why? If you are on /lit/ you probably won't have the same tastes as most people. You are just asking to be dissapointed/disinterested
>asking about books to stupid dumbfuck girls of all people
You played yourself
>>
Worry about yourself brother. People being less interested in reading than the last fifty years doesn't mean the end of civilization is nigh...

Seriously, people on here dismiss modern books as garbage anyhow. There are plenty of classics that can't be read in a single lifetime, choose wisely.

Also, who fucking cares if this person likes The Hunger Games? It sells and is easily accessible to this generation of young adults. I personally have no interests in reading the series but don't critique those who do.
>>
>>7642036
Yes more or less this.

Firstly you shouldn't be caring that much about another's tastes enough to be angry about them, secondary you shouldn't be caring about another's tastes enough to want to tell them why they can read more enjoyable literature if they put in more effort, the latter will have you labelled a pretentious fuckwit.
>>
>>7642019
Unless it's YA. You add a .00000000025 multiplier to any YA related book count number.
>>
I wonder how OP converses when not talking about literature. I'm going to assume he has aspergers and those conversations are just as bad,

>I agree, saying I prefer shit with long ass monolithic paragraphs composed on small numbers of large complex sentences
>she asks what books I read
>I just say 'modernism and postmodernism type stuff' so as not to have to namedrop
>she has no idea what I'm talking about
>I try to explain how postmodern lit balances the ideas of 'high' and 'low' art
>in explaining what 'high art' means, she responds with 'like Shakespeare' as a declarative statement, not a question
>I have no idea how I am supposed to bother continuing, so I just say 'yeah sure' and stare alternatively at the floor and the clock on the wall for the next while
Swear to god no one in any of my English classes actually reads books. I was curious to know what she meant by liking shit more complex than Carver if she had no idea what 'modernism', 'postmodernism', 'high art', or 'low art' meant, but I was almost afraid to ask.

Not even trying to be pretentious; I haven't read half the shit on our top 100 chart, yet I'm fucking Harold Bloom compared to most of my peers. Why the fuck would you major in English if you don't appreciate literature?

Nigger I read 84 books last year, and that's with a period of 2 months when I played Monster Hunter 4 during my usual reading time and another month when I played FF7 and Xenogears

don't worry -- more well-read people think you're a pleb too. keep climbing that ladder. you'll impress a girl someday

What scares me more is all the threads looking for an excuse not to read a book and tell their friends not to read it as well. I'd rather someone read a shit book than look for a reason not to read a classic.
>>
>>7642673
They can. I won't really agree or care for their tastes but they can call themselves what they like. They also won't get taken seriously by famous chefs so it won't matter.
>>
>>7643363
Read Livy's history of Rome if you want some badass motivation for your workouts. I migrated from /fit/ as well, and try to let my interest in the two boards overlap sometimes.

>"For what is there but death, for a few men penned by an army in a ravine whence forest and mountain admit no eacape? All that matters now is how we die: shall we offer our bodies helplessly, like cattle, to the knife, or, refusing passively to await the end shall we turn the strength of our anger to one last battle, till, daring and doing, we fall, drenched with their blood, amongst the heaped bodies and weapons of our dying enemies? Seek him out, the Lucanian traitor, the deserter! Seek and kill him! The man who before he dies sends Flavus as a victim down into Hell, will have great honour and a supreme consolation for his own death.”

Ancient history has a lot of cool stuff worth checking out.

i seriously doubt the people OP is talking to consider themselves serious readers of serious literature. don't take everything so personally, and lay off the leddit meme
>>
>>7643350
most likely. aspergerers get angry at everything right? or is that autism? but at least they don't have god complexes
>>
Why do you care OP, I don't understand why you need an 'appropriate response' to someone just trying to make conversation with you.
My guess is that you just want to assert your knowledge of literature to these people you come across because it's easy to convince them that you're well read.

Either way, dead thread, shit thread, reddit-tier, soc - level, not lit, sage, kill yourself. And everyone who's responded so far with serious suggestions for OP should stop posting on this board and find more suitable homes on /soc/ and r/howtosocialise.

Whoever doesn't strive to keep their reading entirely secret is just missing the point.

You can WRITE about what you read, but ideally THAT should also be hidden, more or less.

If you're reading so you can advertise the fact, it's just pathetic.

And if you ARE reading good stuff, pretend you're reading astrology books if someone should ask.
