That guy from Shearwater. I post his lyrics in favorite poetry threads and people fail to notice it is not literature.

'Embracing Facts'
How the hell could I have been so dumb?
As an outspoken man with a well sharpened tongue,
I sorta thought I'd start to change with age
but I've just stayed the same.

Call me crazy, but today I'm embracing facts:
a past full of mistakes which I can't take back.
It's a cryin' shame
That I'd drag this out just to pass the blame.

How the hell could I have been so weak?
A plush backseat flips my switch on to speak and says
"Your common sense will never pay the rent."
Harsh words from a path that I seldom choose.
I'll scream at the wall as you sing the blues
To the minor chords that you and I simply can't afford

Musicians lyrics never really fare well on their own but in their medium they become art on their own.

From the wreck of the ark
to the fading day of our star
the light races
the light drags
the moon rises
the moon sags
over the rolling waves
and your hands on the balcony
as a spine
pricks the world
and the shudder, deep, is unheard,
but you feel it
oh my god
as the spindle
flies apart
turn your bow to the biggest wave,
but your angel’s on holiday
and that wave rises slowly
and breaks

'Gold Mine Gutted' by Bright Eyes

It was Don DeLillo, whiskey neat
And a blinking midnight clock
Speakers on a TV stand
Just a turntable to watch
And the smoke came out our mouths
On all those hooded sweatshirt walks
We were a stroke of luck
We were a gold mine, they gutted us

And from the sidelines you see me run
Until I'm out of breath
Living the good life, I left for dead
The sorrowful Midwest
Well, I did my best
To keep my head

It was grass stain jeans and incompletes
And a girl from class to touch
But you think about yourself too much
And you ruin who you love
Well all these claims at consciousness
My stray dog freedom
Let's have a nice clean cut
Like a bag we buy and divy up

And from the sidelines, I see you run
Until you're out of breath
And all those white lines that sped us up
We hurried to our death
Well, I lagged behind
So you got ahead

Chico Buarque in Brazil, and if portuguese were a more influent language, in the whole world. He is a great poet, even greater than Bob Dylan.

Agree with Conor Oberst. Now only if he didn't have such a shit singing voice.

'I could have been a famous singer if I had someone else's voice, but failures always sounded better..'

if you've ever seen him perform drunk you'll know why his voice is so great

Stephin Merritt

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It's full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing

But I, I love it when you read to me
And you, you can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact, that's where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb

But I, I love it when you sing to me
And you, you can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It's full of flowers and heart shaped boxes
And things we're all too young to know

But I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings
I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings

False equivalence.

Historically speaking all original poetics were dialogued into musical numbers or songs. To call lyricism not poetic is oversimplification and due just to your-albeit judicious- comparison with the present.

Why has no one said John Darnielle yet?

The most remarkable thing about coming home to you
Is the feeling of being in motion again,

It's the most extraordinary thing in the world.
I have two big hands
And a heart pumping blood
And a 1967 Colt .45
With a busted safety catch.

The world shines
As I cross the Macon county line,
Going to Georgia.

The most remarkable thing about you standing in the doorway is that it's you
And that you are standing in the doorway

And you smile as you ease the gun from my hand
I am frozen with joy right where I stand.
The world throws its light underneath your hair.
40 miles from Atlanta, this is nowhere.

Going to Georgia

The world shines
As I cross the Macon county line,
Going to Georgia

>all these faggots posting rappers
i don't think so, mate. rappers have no subtlety in their lyrics at all, it's as if they've just opened a thesaurus and selected a bunch words longer than four letters that happen to fit with whichever basic rhyme scheme they are using.
they use terrible cringe metaphors and similes that are just their for the sake of it.

the obvious answer:
leonard cohen
nick cave
bob dylan
and maybe ian curtis and lou reed

trying to pass judgement on an entire genre, containing more artists than you could ever hope to listen to, seems like a bit of a sweeping statement doesn't it? I mean, is your use of the pronoun 'they' honestly meant to refer to thousands and thousands of people?
>>
>>7642752

>>7642768
I've listened to multiple tens of thousands of records, that's thousands of hours of rap records and when I say "they" I mean every rap record I've listened to ranging from mainstream shit, to old school memphis shit, to noise-rap, to esoteric field-note style freestyles from the slums of a third world country. There has been maybe five times in all those thousands of hours where i've found something that was impressive.
Music is literally my job. What now, dickhead?

>>7642777
See above, i'm not saying it for the fuck of it. Rap as an art form has yet to see any "greats" of the genre. I'm talking masterful poets and musicians who happen to like the format of "rap" It will happen eventually, it hasn't happened yet.
